Summary of Job Duties:
The Group Fitness Coordinator reports to and assists the Assistant Director for Fitness with the daily operations of the University Recreation fitness programs. This coordinator is responsible for daily operations of the group fitness programs, including participant experience, staff supervision and annual reporting.
Develop and implement special event programming promoting fitness, wellness, recreation and certification workshops. Create and implement short- and long-term goals in program area assessment, learning outcomes, strategic planning, and other departmental initiatives that drive growth, continuous improvement, quality of programs and participation satisfaction. Develop and enforce policies and procedures within areas of responsibility including program and staff manuals. Maintain comprehensive participation and program records for activity, semester, and annual reporting. Prepare, forecast, and monitor all annual income and expenses for group exercise cost center, including payroll, maintenance, and equipment. Collaborate with Assistant Director for Marketing to design and implement an effective marketing plan for group fitness programs. Be knowledgeable with program and departmental software applications and website maintenance. Manage program inventory including purchasing, equipment replacement plans, and long-term program planning. Assess risk management policies and procedures within group fitness and maintain program compliance to department, university and industry standards.
Coordinate, develop, and implement comprehensive & diverse group fitness class offerings in multiple facilities each semester that reflect interests of university community and members. Manage recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, payroll, supervision and evaluation of group exercise instructors, fitness monitors, and program assistants. Create and implement workshops and trainings to develop group exercise instructors based on current industry standards. Document and evaluate staff performance. Develop staff leadership and development opportunities specific to group fitness programming. Manage traveling trainer on-demand fitness program requests from university community.
Regular, reliable, and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, recreation management, higher education, or related field is required from an accredited institution of higher education
At least two years of experience leading group fitness instruction
Demonstration of experience coordinating and leading group fitness programming
Current Group Fitness Instructor certification through AFAA, ACE, ACSM, NSCA or NASM or a nationally accredited organization
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in recreation, exercise science, higher education, or related field is required from an accredited institution of higher education
At least three or more years of progressive experience designing and leading fitness programming
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of national trends and practices in fitness programming
Knowledge of risk management policies and procedures
Ability to teach multiple group fitness class formats
Ability to teach nationally recognized group fitness certifications
Ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required
Ability to supervise and evaluate part-time staff
Ability to create and monitor annual budgets
Ability to adequately train and supervise part-time student employees
Ability to evaluate, assess, and report on program outputs and outcomes
Ability to balance multiple assignments, deadlines, and tasks
Ability to work in a team environment
Ability to create environments that foster equitable participation of all groups while seeking to address and acknowledge issues of oppression, privilege and power
Current CPR, AED, and First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire
