Context & Mission

Médecins Sans Frontières is an independent, international medical and humanitarian organization that provides care to people in need, people affected by natural or man-made disasters, and victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and without regard to race, religion, creed or political affiliation (MSF Charter).

The Trainer in Emergency Care participates in the need assessment, preparation, implementation and follow-up of trauma, mass casualty and other related emergency and acute care trainings. These courses are part of OCG`s overall strategic plan. The Trainer is based in the L&D unit and provides support to the OCG Emergency Care team composed by the DMED/BEMU Emergency/Intensive care advisor and implementor. The Trainer also collaborates with the intersectional PTC/BASIC course coordinator for the Primary Trauma Care course.

The L&D strategy in terms of training consists of developing and structuring our programs, and offering training adapted to the contexts. The objective is to contribute to the improvement of quality of care offering a theoretical and practical approach.

The overall objective is to contribute to the improvement of the quality of emergency care in the field.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • In conjunction with Emergency Care Advisors, Emergency Care implementer and the L&D unit, conducts need analysis of projects and define learning needs.
  • Guides and advises projects on the best way to meet their needs and strengthen the skills of their teams on acute care.
  • Work in the organization and matching of the training projects to the field needs in collaboration with the cells
  • Prepare, plan and implement Emergency Care and Disaster Medicine trainings courses including Primary Trauma Course and Mass Casualty management. Additional course may be added to the portfolio
  • Contribute to the development of a roll-out strategy for EM trainings
  • Contribute to the development of teaching methods and training contents
  • Create / revise methodology and content as required in conjunction with emergency care advisors and EMACC
  • Create, review, complete and harmonize training documents related to Trauma and Mass Casualty
  • In conjunction with the PTC / BASIC course coordinator, arrange training teams for PTC and assist in instructor training
  • Travel to the field for delivery of on-site trainings
  • Support the consolidation of knowledge on standards, guidelines, and tools
  • Offer individual and / or collective support with mentoring and coaching actions on site or remotely
  • Define the conditions of implementation (before, during, after) the training.

In relation to PTC

  • Collaborates with the intersectional PTC / BASIC coordinator in the development of the PTC course within MSF
  • Assist in managing the PTC instructor selection and training
  • IF work commitments within OCG allow:
  1. Assist in field trainings for PTC for other OC’s in a collaborative effort to support the field worldwide movement in emergency care and disaster medicine support.
  2. Contribute to develop the Trauma BASIC module

Evaluation & follow up of the trainings in the field

  • Write a report following trainings, joint reports with Emergency Care Referents when appropriate, organize debriefings.
  • Ensures post-training follow-up in collaboration with managers. Perform post-training evaluations: possibility to return to the field to assess the impact of learning and the relevance of the strategy put in place.
  • Conduct a reflection and substantive analysis to improve the training offered in Emergency Care and Disaster Medicine.

Your Profile

Training

  • Medical: nurse or medical doctor
  • Certification in PTC /- BASIC course, trained in MSF Mass Casualty Plan teaching
  • Training of trainer or other training in pedagogy, adults’ education

Experience

  • Extensive and recent experience in Emergency Medicine
  • Experience in trauma care & mass casualty management
  • Experienced trainer
  • Experience in MSF projects involving trauma and mass casualty skills
  • Knowledge of MSF guidelines in emergency, trauma, and mass casualty protocols

Languages

  • Fluent English and French
  • Arabic a plus

Terms of Employment

  • Fixed-term contract, 10 months
  • Part or Full-time, 80 / 100%
  • Working place : Field-based position (various missions up to 80% of the time) with visits to HQ in Geneva.
  • Practical working conditions in the field are in accordance with the MSF OCG volunteer manual.
  • Ideal start date: As Soon As Possible
  • Gross monthly salary: CHF 5’500.- based on 100%
  • Benefits: Health insurance and living expenses in the countries of intervention and at headquarters, paid according to internal regulations.
