The Forest Markets Program Coordinator positions exist to promote traditional and emerging markets, including biomass development, wood products processing, small diameter utilization and carbon storage and sequestration opportunities, using wood supply from forest and watershed restoration activities, timber sales and hazardous fuels reduction, and to support the needs of forest landowners and forest industry in New Mexico. The position also exists to deliver climate mitigation and forest resilience programs to underserved landowners, advance the use of carbon markets to conserve forests and and working lands, and to mitigate climate change impacts.

The key responsibilities are to

(1) provide technical assistance for underserved landowners to help them steward their land to yield a variety of benefits, including but not limited to carbon storage and sequestration, climate mitigation and forest resilience;

(2) educate landowners about climate-informed forestry techniques and practices;

(3) connect underserved landowners to an array of incentives, programs, and markets including assisting landowners in understanding and navigating opportunities in carbon or other emerging markets; and

(4) advance the use of carbon markets to conserve forests and working lands in New Mexico to mitigate climate change impacts, including avoided carbon releases, carbon sequestered, reductions in carbon-based energy use, etc., and developing baseline data and reporting procedures.
