Salary: $4,602.00 – $7,184.00 Monthly 
Positions with permanent duty stations in King County receive an additional 5% added to their monthly base salary. The salary listed in this announcement reflects the additional 5%.

Responsibilities:
Qualifying experience for the Professional Engineer License may be signed off for engineers with an Engineering in Training certification. Your duties will include bridge inspections, bridge maintenance, engineering survey, design, culvert design, including fish passage structures, and construction compliance on low-volume forest road projects utilizing the agency’s heavy equipment crew and private contractors. Additionally, you will be tasked with the development of public works contracts and prioritization and coordination of road maintenance and construction activities. In this position, you will interact with professionals having diverse talents and skill sets. You will have the opportunity to work frequently with other engineers, foresters, wildlife biologists, GIS professionals, geologists, and heavy equipment operators, to name a few.

  • Providing recommendations for actions on bridges, culverts, and other maintenance needs on forest roads
  • Providing recommendations on corrections to fish barriers
  • Bridge condition inspections

Qualifications:

This may be filled as an in-training position. This is designated as a 12-24 month training plan (may be extended to 36 months). If you complete all elements of the training steps in a shorter amount of time, we may waive the remainder of the time required. Candidates will be considered as Civil Engineer 1 (CE2 In-Training) or Civil Engineer 2, depending on qualifications.

Civil Engineer 1 (CE2 In-Training) 
(Salary range: $4,602 – $6,198 per month):

  • Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering, Forest Operations, or related degree, or will be obtained within 7 months of hire date.
    OR A combination of equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Knowledge of with forest engineering principles, techniques, and applications such as: logging systems, harvest system design, and road transportation design.
  • Knowledge of ground and cable logging systems, and forest road construction equipment and use.
  • Knowledge of forest practice standards, laws, and rights-of-way.
  • Experience in the use of engineering equipment, tools, and software-including in an academic environment.
  • Knowledge of components required to field designing timber sale road plans.
  • Positive interpersonal and communication skills.

Civil Engineer 2  
(Salary range: $5,341-$7,184 per month):

  • Bachelor’s or Advanced Degree in Forest or Civil Engineering or related field, or will obtain within 7 months of hire date, and one year experience in forest road maintenance, timber sale layout, or other equivalent experience.
    OR 2 years of experience as a Civil Engineer 1
    OR a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Experience in hydraulic structure design.
  • Experience in contract administration and compliance.
  • Experience with timber sales road plan preparation and administration.
  • Experience using programs such as; MS Word, MS Excel, and ArcMap basic and advanced. Also have working knowledge of Skyline XL, AutoCAD, and RoadEng, and the aptitude for learning new software programs.
  • Experience with GPS programs, ArcGIS products (including map making), and other engineering tools and software programs.
  • Experience in navigation using maps, Avenza, aerial photos, compass, orthos, clinometer, radio, laser rangefinder, and GPS.
  • Experience inspecting, instructing, and working with agency heavy equipment crew, and contract crews to ensure road projects are completed as specified.
  • Experience with current forest practice standards, laws, plans, and associated agency policies and WACs.
  • Experience in theory, policy, principles, and practices of the forest engineering profession as applied to Northwestern United States (i.e., fundamentals of: markets and economics, sales layout, logging methods, road engineering, water quality, watershed management, fish passage design.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
