JOB SUMMARY

Wallowa Resources is seeking a Forest Stewardship Crew Project Manager  to lead a small field crew supporting forest restoration and fuels reduction projects across the Northern Blue Mountains. The Project Manager will supervise a three-person crew conducting unit layout, data collection, and other forestry fieldwork in collaboration with federal, state, Tribal, and private partners. This program expands local stewardship capacity, provides hands-on workforce development opportunities, and supports cross-boundary restoration efforts. The Project Manager will oversee training, safety, and crew performance; track progress and data; and ensure high-quality completion of field tasks. Work includes timber cruising,  timber sale layout, fuels reduction unit layout, stand exams, GPS mapping, data collection, and other stewardship activities. Overnight travel and fieldwork in variable conditions are required.

The Project Manager will also help design and grow the Forest Stewardship Crew program. Responsibilities include coordinating with Forest Service staff and other partners to identify and prepare project work, plan logistics, and ensure effective crew deployment. As part of WR’s workforce development mission, the Project Manager will provide learning opportunities that help crew members gain the skills and experience needed for careers in forestry and natural resources.

JOB DUTIES AND CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Communicate regularly and effectively with the Senior Forest Program Manager and  Wallowa-Whitman – Umatilla National Forest partners.
  • Lead and coordinate crew training, onboarding, and supervision and ensure a culture of learning and support within the crew
  • Lead crew through all aspects of project work and ensure crew provides quality work
  • Timber cruising, assist in implementing layout for timber sales and silviculture projects
  • Use of handheld GPS devices/programs (e.g. Field Maps, Avenza)
  • Use of forestry tools (e.g. Laser rangefinder, compass, logger’s tape, clinometer)
  • Collecting accurate and thorough data for timber sales and silviculture projects
  • Beyond offseason crew and field work planning, there should be a willingness to assist with other natural resource workforce development projects and efforts during the off season.
  • Seasonal crew recruitment – during the off season to identify future crew members
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills
  • Interact positively and professionally with landowners, locals, and agency employees
  • Be able to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances
  • Ability to make decisions and promote a safe and efficient work environment
  • The crew may work on other restoration/stewardship work as identified

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Seeking candidates with experience in timber cruising, forest inventory sampling, and unit layout or relevant experience
  • Experience training, supervising and motivating a crew or team toward a common goal
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to interface with diverse partners
  • A valid Driver’s License, with a minimum of two years driving under that license, and an acceptable driving record according to WR’s auto liability policy requirements. A crew vehicle and basic equipment will be provided.
  • Willingness to work outside in all types of weather including overnight camping
  • Must be able to navigate steep, rugged terrain and have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Flexibility to work variable hours and travel
  • Comfortability driving and working in remote locations

PREFERRED

  • Experience leading a crew in a field setting
  • Practical knowledge of forestry operations and stewardship-based fuel reduction projects
  • Competency in the use of technical forestry equipment: GPS/GIS, navigation, data gathering/processing, compass, increment borer, densiometer, and clinometer
  • Experience working in collaborative partnerships and private landowners
  • Experience in workforce development, mentorship, or building training opportunities for early-career or entry-level forestry / natural resource workers
  • Experience in applied forestry or natural resources and/or a degree in Forestry, Natural Resources
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Esri ArcGIS and ability to produce maps
  • Ability to identify native trees and shrubs

WORKING CONDITIONS

Environment and Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to hike and navigate difficult terrain in inclement, hot, or smoky weather; use electronic devices such as computers, tablets, phones, GPS, or data collectors; and will occasionally need to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Hours: Typical office hours are full time from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday (4, 10 hour days). The incumbent may be required to work extended hours and travel on non-work days. This includes evenings, weekends, and holidays.
