Who we are:

44.moles GmbH is a German based company aiming  to revolutionize the carbon market with transparency and innovative software. We quantify the carbon fluxes of forests worldwide using laser scanning technology and adhering to the IPCC guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventories. We are looking for a seasonal Forest Technician to join the team of Climate Forest LLC, our operative subsidiary in Maine, USA, in the Summer-Fall field season of 2024.

Successful applicants will be passionate about hands-on conservation, data collection, and rugged field work. Most days are spent walking through dense secondary forests while using a highly sophisticated handheld LiDAR scanner. This position is seasonal with an hourly rate of $15. There is a stipend for travel days, as well as a $5 bonus for each scan completed. 

The proposed term of employment is from June 15th through October 31st, 2024. However, we can be flexible with timing depending on the situation. This position can be either full-time or part-time (>20hrs per week), depending on the situation.

Forest Technicians are responsible for:

  • Conducting laser scans in assigned forest areas using handheld scanning equipment provided by the Company
  • Uploading the collected data to our IT Department
  • Traveling regionally to conduct scans and check on properties periodically
  • Collaborating with other Technicians to ensure projects are completed in a safe and efficient manner
  • Developing a comprehensive understanding of the protocol and staying current with changes
  • Maintaining Company equipment including Scanner, Vehicles, Electronic Equipment, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in off-trail navigation using a handheld GPS device, satellite imagery, and compass
  • Computer proficiency and familiarity with file management
  • Valid driver’s license and experience driving 4wd vehicles on unimproved roads
  • Vehicle recovery, safety, and trailering experience preferred 
  • Experience in forestry or field surveys desirable
  • Wilderness first aid experience desirable 
  • Ability to work independently in remote areas and communicate effectively with other team members
  • Diligence/Accuracy in data collection
  • Reliability
  • Willingness to travel
  • Enjoyment of working in nature

This position is primarily based in forested areas of varying successional stages and exposure to adverse weather conditions is common. Forest Technicians are frequently required to walk several kilometers per day off-trail through dense vegetation. While conducting scans, Forest Technicians must navigate the assigned plot area while keeping themselves and the scanner safe from injury or damage. Technicians must be able to lift and carry a 30-45 lb pack, frequently stand, walk, kneel, bend, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push, climb, pull, use hands to finger, handle  and operate equipment. A successful candidate will be experienced in conducting field work under difficult environmental conditions and be able to maintain company standards in safety, gear management, and data collection.
