Forestry Program Coordinator

Position Overview:

The Forestry Program Coordinator will assist with projects and program services in our Forest Stewardship Institute. Their work will support landowners in managing their forests, provide educational opportunities for the NEK community, and implement sustainable forest management in the Demonstration Forest at NorthWoods.

Main Roles and Responsibilities include:

• Coordination and planning of workshops, tours, landowner group gatherings and events related to forestry, ecology and land management (30%)
• Coordination, planning and implementation of hands-on forestry projects including management activities, monitoring, and crew projects (20%)
• Supervision of Sustainable Forestry Interns in partnership with the Director of Forest Stewardship (30%)
• Outreach and communication with forest landowners (10%)
• Producing media (photos, video, articles, etc) to highlight NorthWoods Forest Stewardship Institute projects and landowners (10%)

Through these projects, the Forestry Program Coordinator will gain experience in forest management, leadership roles, as well as building skills in communicating with landowners, other conservation professionals, and the public. This position includes time for professional development including attending conferences/webinars, meeting with other professionals, and self-guided learning. NorthWoods may be able to support the Forestry Program Coordinator in pursuing a Vermont Forestry License and/or Vermont Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification, depending on previous experience and coursework.

Qualifications:

• College or graduate-level degree in forestry, environmental science or related field OR comparable experience that demonstrates knowledge of northeast forests and management
• Work and/or academic (research, internship, etc.) experience in forestry and/or conservation
• Knowledge of northeastern forests, including tree/plant species, natural communities, wildlife habitats and forest dynamics
• Ability to work in a physically demanding outdoor setting for extended periods in varied weather
• Experience communicating effectively and professionally with landowners and/or clients via phone and email
• Ability to create high-quality written reports/articles, photos and short videos
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Excel (data management and formulas)
• Valid Driver’s License
• Demonstrated ability to effectively work with a diverse range of people

Preferred Skills/Knowledge:

• Experience leading field crews and involvement in the hiring process
• Experience with invasive plant control and willingness to work towards certification
• Experience using chainsaws and possession of any recognized certifications and trainings
• Experience and/or coursework in ArcGIS or similar GIS software
• First aid/first responder training and/or experience
• Preference given to candidates with prior, positive experience at NorthWoods

Responsibilities and Expectations: 

• Ensure that NorthWoods is a resource for the community for high-quality professional services, programming, facilities and expertise.
• Maintain good communication and professional working relationships with NorthWoods staff, program participants, partners, and the general public.
• Work independently and with coworkers to produce project outcomes on-schedule.
• Adhere to all NorthWoods procedures and policies related to staff conduct, safety and project implementation.
• Engage in professional development activities, as needed, to stay current with necessary job skills and knowledge.
• Attend meetings, workshops and special events as necessary to represent NorthWoods and support forestry programs.
• Complete other general support tasks for the organization as needed, including maintenance, weekend and evening hours, etc.
• Maintain NorthWoods tools and equipment in good working condition; keep work sites organized and safe; ensure that offices, woodshop, storage areas, lodge, etc. are clean, usable and appealing to visitors.

Employment Period: Flexible start date in February/March 2025. Full-time, year round position.

Workweek: 40 hours per week between Monday-Friday, with occasional weekend and evening events. Option for reduced hours (32-36hrs/week) with prorated salary. This position is primarily in-person, with occasional opportunities for remote work

Salary: $40,000-42,000, dependent on experience, paid biweekly
