Forestry Technician III/ Field Crew Supervisor

Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision, responsible for vehicle maintenance, infrastructure management, and activities related to forestry and wildlife habitat enhancement.  

• Under general supervision of the Forest director, responsible for vehicle operations and infrastructure maintenance and preventative repairs and activities such as but not limited to equipment, buildings, roads, and recreation area maintenance and land clearing.
• Performs general mechanic work to include reports and shop inspections. Creates, organizes, reconciles, and compiles files and reports. Purchases necessary supplies, materials, and equipment to accomplish the job.
• Supervises the general maintenance staff. Ensures the Employee Performance Management System (EPMS) is used as a continuous communication tool and planning stages and evaluations are completed within the agency timeframes. Ensures staff is following proper safety procedures.
• Assists with forest management activities including but not limited to prescribed burning, wildfire suppression timber cruising, timber marking, wildfire and recreation management, and general maintenance.
• Performs administrative record keeping activities. Maintain written and/or electronic records of work performed in compliance with forest certification documents and other agency policies and procedures.
• Performs other duties as requested in support of the SC Forestry Commission’s mission and strategic goals.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

• A high school diploma and three (3) years’ experience of relevant work experience.
• Must be able to operate light to heavy mechanized equipment.
• Must pass agency’s initial physical fitness test that requires a two (2) mile walk carrying a 25 lb. pack in 30 minutes or meet the agency’s physical fitness program requirements.
• Must obtain firefighter registration with the Office of State Fire Marshal.
• Criminal background check and drug test are required.
• Position requires a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). Must have Commercial Leaners Permit (CLP) prior to employment. must complete CDL Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) Theory training within 15 days of hire then obtain a Commerical Driver’s License within 90 working days.
