Australian Marine Conservation Society's logo

The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) is the voice for Australia’s oceans. We are Australia’s leading ocean conservation organisation and one of the founding members of Australia’s conservation movement. We are a community of ocean lovers across the nation working to protect our precious marine wildlife and for healthy seas.

We are an independent charity, staffed by a committed group of scientists, educators and passionate advocates who have defended Australia’s oceans since 1965. Our paid and volunteer staff work every day to protect our coasts and oceans.

ABOUT THE ROLE

In this newly created role, we’re seeking an experienced and effective senior policy expert and campaigner to play a critical part in our campaigns to protect our oceans and climate from offshore fossil fuel developments, including engaging with key regulatory and legislative drivers of the emerging threat to our oceans from CCS.

The Fossil Fuel Industry Campaigner drives our work to prevent the expansion of CCS and supports our overall campaign to tackle the expansion of the offshore fossil fuel industry in Australia’s oceans.

This role will be crucial in connecting the legislative, regulatory and financial drivers of CCS expansion in our oceans to the AMCS public campaign to protect our oceans from seismic blasting and fossil fuel expansion, as part of ending acreage release of our ocean for fossil fuels and CCS.

This position will work closely with the Oil and Gas Campaign Manager in engaging with parliamentary, regulatory and industry bodies to stop CCS in our oceans. Collaboration within AMCS across relevant campaigns and with external allied organisations and stakeholders is essential.

THIS ROLE INVOLVES:

  • Developing campaign policy advice relating to offshore fossil fuels and CCS proposals affecting Australian commonwealth waters.

  • Leading on developing and delivering policy, documents and submissions for, but not limited to, the Sea Dumping, OPGGS and EPBC Acts, and parliamentary inquiries.

  • Collaborating with organisations working on CCS industry finances and economics, and keeping abreast of financial incentives and drivers of offshore CCS development from government, industry and other bodies to incorporate into the campaign.

  • Providing advice and campaign guidance on offshore fossil fuel projects and offsets markets that enable CCS proposals.

  • Developing and delivering of campaign plans in collaboration with the Campaign Manager.

  • Representing AMCS in the media on campaign-related issues.

Please see the attached PD for a full list of responsibilities and further details on the role including the selection criteria. For more information on AMCS’ Offshore Oil & Gas campaign see here.
