Position description

The Alliance Française of Washington DC (AFDC) is the leading French language and cultural center in the Mid-Atlantic region. Since its reopening in 1949 after a 10-year war hiatus, AFDC has been dedicated to creating and offering Washingtonians innovative and unique programs in education and the arts, all exploring the evolving diversity and richness of French and francophone cultures. AFDC aims to increase the knowledge of the French language, and to encourage interaction among French, Francophone and American people through education and cultural programs.

AFDC presents Cinema (AFDC Film Festival; Euro-Asia Shorts; EU Film Festival), Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Lectures, Tastings, Social Event programs, and a bi-annual Fashion Show. AFDC participates in Kids’ Euro Festival, Festinéma, and offers a wide variety of events to its younger crowds. AFDC also has an extensive French Multimedia Center as well as a digital library, Culturetheque.

The AFDC Language Center is the largest language school dedicated to teaching the French language in the DC/MD/VA tri-state area. With more than 4,500 registrations annually, we offer French in one convenient location: Kalorama (weekdays and Saturdays) in Washington DC, online or in person, for all ages (starting at 1 year old) and all levels (from complete beginners to advanced)

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Curate cultural season in accordance with event series and in coordination with the Executive Director
  • Manage events from start to finish
  • Liaise with partners on existing projects (e.g. Francophonie Festival), and seek new partnerships and sponsorships for future projects and events
  • Communicate with various constituencies, e.g. speakers, bookstores, publishing houses, on coordinating events
  • Provide logistical support for events (booking hotels, buying train tickets for speakers, etc.)
  • Set up library into cultural space and clean up back into library format (moving furniture, installing/removing 50 to 60 folding chairs)
  • Manage a team of volunteers
  • Manage orders (wine, pastries, baguettes, etc.) and do grocery shopping for events
  • Perform administrative tasks, including but not limited to maintaining volunteer, events & inventory database, event budget management, contracts, MOUs.
  • Manage A/V equipment (microphones & projector)
  • Create and update event web pages on both AFDC’s website and on Eventbrite

PRACTICAL DETAILS

  • Full-time Exempt position
  • 3-month trial period
  • Work on-site + one telework day per week after a 3-month trial period, with authorization of the Executive Director and only after evaluation of the needs of the team. Please understand that teleworking is not a priority and not guaranteed.
  • Evenings (especially Thursdays and Fridays, but other evenings too sometimes) and occasional Saturdays are required as per the cultural programming
  • Reports to: Executive Director Sarah Diligenti

REQUIREMENTS

  • Fluency in both French and English, written and verbal: the position requires corresponding officially either by mail, email or by telephone with diplomats and partners in BOTH French and English. C1 level is a minimum.
  • Valid work permit in the USA (green card, citizenship, work visa, etc.).
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds and stand for more than 2 hours (some cultural events held at partner venues have no seatings)
  • Available weeknights and occasional Saturdays
  • Ability to work with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Teams, Zoom

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related field: French, History, Literature, International Relations, Hospitality, etc.
  • Expertise at writing in English and French – C1 level is a minimum.
  • Ability to work under stress and on multiple projects at once
  • Exceptional team player skills
  • Exceptional presentation and communication skills
