The University Center for International Studies (UCIS) established REEES and ESC as interdisciplinary centers focused on Eastern Europe and the successor states of the Soviet Union, as well as the European Union and Europe, respectively. As Title VI National Resource Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education, REEES and ESC are both tasked with the mandate to advance regionally focused scholarship and teaching on campus and among the wider communities in the United States. Additionally, the European Studies Center is a Jean Monnet European Union Center of Excellence, one of eight such centers in the United States recognized by the European Union. In 2024-2026, the two centers will solidify their partnership further by establishing ValEUs: A Jean Monnet Network on Foreign Policy, a global research and education network funded by the European Commission comprising 20 academic institutions from 17 countries across 5 continents. The purpose of this network will be to build collective research capacity, develop innovative teaching collaborations, and engage in impactful societal policy debate, resulting in policy recommendations for EU stakeholders while promoting universities as globally invested, democratic actors who act as committed partners to endangered countries, such as Ukraine.
The Fulbright Visiting Professor will have the opportunity to join this network but will be expected to conduct research on the project “The Changing Relationship of Institutionalized and Protest Politics in East Central Europe,” in line with the terms of the Fulbright award. They will likewise be encouraged to develop strong relationships with students, staff, and faculty across a range of units, including REEES, ESC, the Less Commonly Taught Languages Center, the Department of Political Science, and the Nationality Rooms and Intercultural Exchange Programs. Their teaching assignment will include serving as the instructor for one course per semester, teaching your proposed undergraduate course titled “Russia’s War Against Ukraine: Solidarity and Protest in Central Europe.” This course will be offered under HUN 1915: Fulbright Seminar in Hungarian Studies, being cross-listed with the Department of Political Science but open to students enrolled in multiple credentials offered through the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, the University Center for International Studies, and the David C. Frederick Honors College. The incumbent will be expected to submit a complete syllabus to REEES Associate Director.
A Master’s or PhD in European Studies; Russian, East European, or Eurasian Studies; Political Science; Hungarian Studies; or a related field is required
