The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Heidelberg University invites applications for a

Full Professorship (W3) for Physical Computation (f/m/d)

at the Kirchhoff Institute for Physics.

Computing with physical structures is a central theme of the Heidelberg Cluster of Excellence STRUCTURES, which encompasses mathematical, theoretical physics and experimental physics activities. With this new professor position, we want to strengthen and/or expand the available experimental platforms for physical computation. Thus, the applicant’s research should address the implementation of innovative experimental platforms for information processing based on architectures beyond the von Neumann paradigm. This can range from classical to quantum information processing with a physical system, for example acoustics, micro- and macrofluidics, atomic, molecular and optical systems, polariton systems, two-dimensional materials or circuit quantum electrodynamics.

The professorship is closely related to the Cluster of Excellence STRUCTURES. Scientific links to the experimental as well as theoretical activities in STRUCTURES should be natural, and interfaces to other research topics in STRUCTURES at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science should be envisioned. STRUCTURES hiring strategy particularly foresees the support of highly qualified researchers at an early stage of their career.

The future position holder is expected to be committed to excellence in teaching and to participate to the usual extent in the courses in experimental physics in the Bachelor′s and Master′s programs, as well as in the Heidelberg Graduate School for Physics.

Prerequisites for an application are a university degree, a qualified Doctorate, successful teaching experience and (in accordance with Article 47, Paragraph 2 of the Higher Education Law of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg) a habilitation, a successfully evaluated junior professorship, or equivalent qualifications.

Please submit your application with the usual documents (CV and list of publications, statement of research interests, brief description of future research plans, and a summary of experience in and plans for teaching) as a single PDF file until 31.01.2024, to the Dean of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Heidelberg University, Prof. Dr. André Butz, [email protected].
