The Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District (SLCMAD) is hiring a part-time, seasonal Garden Specialist to assist in the care and maintenance of the pollinator habitat and community garden! If you are passionate about native plants, pollinators, gardening, and being outdoors then this is the position for you! 

The SLCMAD’s pollinator habitat was started in the fall of 2023 using native plants received through the Utah Pollinator Habitat Program. SLCMAD plans to expand the pollinator habitat with additional native plants this season and continue to develop and expand our community garden. Through these gardens, educational and outreach opportunities will be available to the community, as well as citizen science programs and biodiversity studies. Responsibilities:

  • Care for and regularly maintain the pollinator habitat and community garden, such as but not limited to, planting, weeding, pruning, digging, working with volunteers, and other tasks that arise
  • Install garden fixtures, i.e., edging, walkway materials
  • Site preparation for native plants
  • Make recommendations for the improvement of and the success and health of the gardens
  • Participate in educational and outreach activities/events
  • Work as a team or independently as needed

Preferences: 

  • Previous experience with pollinator habitats and/or community gardens
  • A working knowledge in pollinator habitats/gardens, landscaping, horticulture, botany, biology, or related, and interest in learning more
  • A passion for gardening and working outdoors
  • Able to safely and effectively perform all physical tasks essential to the position and understand the physical commitment required for gardening
  • Able to work safely in all climatic conditions, including full sun, heat, cold, precipitation, etc.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Must be 18 or older
  • Good communication and time management skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Must have a valid drivers license
  • Must be able to work in the United States
  • Some prior experience related to the position is a plus!
