Position description

At IREX we strive for a more just, prosperous, and inclusive world—where individuals reach their full potential, governments serve their people and communities thrive.

But around the globe, persistent poverty, repression, and injustice prevent too many people from achieving their full potential.  To address these problems, we focus on people, not on vaccines, roads, or wells. We support individuals and institutions to create change in their own communities—and to create person to person bridges between nations.

IREX works with partners in more than 100 countries in four areas essential to progress: cultivating leaders, empowering youth, strengthening institutions, and increasing access to quality education and information.

We are doers. Our decades of on-the-ground experience help us create greater impact, practical recommendations, and lasting partnerships.

Summary of Position:

IREX seeks qualified expert consultants in Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) to provide organizational and programmatic GESI support. The GESI consultants will support IREX’s Center for Applied Learning and Impact team to understand IREX’s impact on inclusive development, track progress on its organizational GESI Vision and develop IREX GESI talent. This may include support for GESI efforts of programs across all IREX practice areas. IREX, therefore, specifically seeks GESI professionals with experience relevant to any or all of its 5 practice areas: Youth, Leadership, Information and Media, Education, and Communities and Governance (including civil society). The consultant may also support the evolution of a network of GESI advisors within IREX and the use of best practices and tools or contribute to new business development. Multiple consultants may be hired from this recruitment.

  • Develop learning content to train, coach, or mentor GESI staff on best practices and tools.

  • Conduct and mentor others in GESI analyses, using (as needed) a mixture of qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Support use and assessment of GESI competencies in training resources and tools for project partners and participants, including co-design and co-facilitation of GESI trainings with program teams..
  • Conduct GESI risk assessments with program teams to ensure adherence to IREX’s Do No (More) Harm principles.
  • Review program management documents, such as implementation plans and monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) plans.

Contribute to new business development efforts through designing and drafting GESI elements of proposals, including but not limited to GESI analyses.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in gender or women’s studies, international development, social science, or another relevant field, advanced degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with GESI mainstreaming on international donor-funded programs. Familiarity with USAID or USG GESI strategies, frameworks and requirements preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting interactive training using adult learning methods and brave space principles.
  • Demonstrated experience with data collection, data analysis and presentation of findings for intersectional gender analyses or GESI analyses. Proficiency with visualizing intersectional data preferred.
  • Experience researching, adapting and training others to design, develop and use practical and robust GESItools. Proficiency with competency-based frameworks and tools preferred.
  • Ability to support proposal and program teams with GESI activities that are accessible and integrated with program goals and activities.
  • Exceptional collaboration skills and a proven track record of working effectively with non-technical staff at all levels.
  • Professional interpersonal and communication skills in English (written and oral), including a demonstrated ability to promote GESI principles and approaches to program staff and in-country partners.
