Organizational Setting

Empowering communities in The Gambia to prevent, mitigate and resolve land related conflicts exacerbated by climate change.
Project is funded by The United Nations Peace Building Fund and being implemented by FAO, WFP and IOM in collaboration with Ministries of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security (MOALFS), Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources (MECCNAR), Local Government and Land (MOLG, Civil Society Organisation, and other stakeholders. It aims to address the main factors of climate exacerbated conflicts over land and natural resources within and between communities. The project proposes a local approach to conflict resolutions, whereby community members between and within the targeted areas will be jointly engaged to use technical land reclamation and management practices to increase production and productivity of degraded lands and reduce food and nutrition insecurity vulnerability, climate induced migration, and create a conducive opportunity for community-based resources management. The following regions: Lower River Region (LRR), North Bank Region (NBR) & Central River Region (CRR) have been identified for the implementation of this project.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative, with technical support from the Gender and Development Expert in FAOSFW, the Gender Specialist, FAO Country Office, will report to the Assistant FAOR for Programmes.

Technical Focus

The Gender Specialist will perform overall analysis and coordination of gender related project activities, provide technical training on gender related matters of the project and carry out other relevant tasks in the project.

Tasks and responsibilities

Analysis and Coordination of Gender related activities

• Conduct a vulnerability needs of the various stakeholder/beneficiaries in the communities to build a consensus to identify the level of need and participation of each stakeholder,
• Analyse and develop a plan of action based on the on the vulnerability needs assessment and the gender relations in rural farming communities, including access and ownership of as well as decision-making on land for agricultural activities,
• Coordinate and monitor the participation of youth, women and men in project activities: Cash for Work or Asset for Food, based on equality.
• Lead the implementation activities that will enhance gender sensitive access to productive lands for food production.

Technical Training on Gender related activities

• Develop a training guide and roll out a training on gender related technical trainings of the project based on the needs assessment and the plan of action, and a report.
• Adopt a stakeholder engagement mechanism to engage different actors and advocate for gender sensitive conflict resolutions,
• Participate in technical trainings on land reclamation and management practices, for community based natural resource management,
• Provide guidance to ensure gender disaggregation and implementation of the project indicators.
• Contribute to timely analysis and dissemination of project annual reports.

Undertake any other duties as may be assigned

• Carry out other relevant tasks within the project implementation framework as may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements

• Master’s Degree in Social or Natural Sciences or other relevant disciplines with specialization in gender management from a recognized academic institution/s.
• A minimum of 5 years of practical experience in the field of gender equality and gender mainstreaming.
• Working knowledge of English and any local language.
• National of Gambia
