Mandatory Position
This position is designated as ‘mandatory’ and, when contacted to report to work, its incumbent is expected to reach the building as expeditiously as possible using normal precautions as dictated by the adverse weather conditions.
Primary Purpose of Position This is a High Voltage Generator Technician (Mechanical Trades) with a specialty in Generators and Automatic Transfers Switches. The position is considered to be fully functioning in a particular trade area. Additionally, this position is expected to be able to perform all general maintenance work at the contributing level. This position may also be allowed to perform/learn another trade discipline either at the contributing or journey level. Tasks may include maintenance, repair, placement, fabrication, installation, alteration, construction, and design of facility components in the assigned zone or core maintenance. The technician is needed for High Voltage Distribution. Need someone who can safely and properly maintain the HV system in the Advanced Technician’s absence. Assist with switching procedure development and execution.
Minimum Education/Experience Required Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalency and six months of electrical experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
University Preferred Qualifications:
High school diploma and two years of electrical experience, including all phases of high voltage distribution operations; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must maintain required certifications.
Essential Job Duties 1. Read and comprehend blueprints.
2. Generate Bills of Materials as well as tool lists from drawing interpretations and field survey.
3. Function independently and make decisions in pressure situations requiring attention to corrective actions within safety guidelines.
4. Evaluate and maintain MV system components using all state of the art tools and technologies.
5. Properly actuate MV switch devices of multiple manufacturers.
6. Understand techniques and execute the termination of MV cabling connections and rubber goods.
7. Lead a crew in the execution of tasks.
8. Proficiently operate test instruments including 3-point ground test, insulation resistance testers, Hi-Pot equipment, basic VOM handheld instruments, recording power quality graphing meters, and other electrical characteristics measurement devices.
9. Demonstrated skill-sets for entry of confined spaces, with the knowledge of all PPE and safety equipment needed to rack label and test conductors, and perform underground tasks.
Other Work Responsibilities 1. Assist with complex switching procedures for the existing MV distribution system.
2. Install and troubleshoot electrical systems.
3. Perform on-call reporting after hours when necessary to rectify or make safe emergency requirements.
4. Participate in team operations that often require shutdown activities on evenings and weekends
5. Report to work during adverse weather conditions as an essential employee to meet the needs of this team as well as Facilities Operations as a whole.
Departmental Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education 1. High school diploma or GED equivalency and two – four years of electrical experience including all phases of high voltage distribution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
2. Certified electrical technician training programs for generator maintenance and operation (i.e. EGSA (Electrical Generator Systems Association certification) preferred.
3. In-depth knowledge of service functions on major generator manufacturers’ equipment.
4. Electrical industry-related licensees, credentials, or safety certifications preferred.
5. Knowledge of load bank installation and procedures.
6. Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel to maintain equipment maintenance records.
7. Ability to effectively communicate the English language (reading, writing, interpretation, and comprehension) required.
8. Effective skills in verbal, written, and interpersonal communication.
9. Ability to effectively work/interact with persons from different backgrounds.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications A Valid driver’s license. The High Voltage Distribution Specialist operates assigned vehicles on and/or off campus and must possess, maintain, or obtain a valid driver’s license upon appointment to the position.
Maintains required certifications.
