Job Description:

  • Primary responsibilities will include clinical genetic counseling for patients and families at the UF Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases. Work as part of a team with the supervising clinician/neurologist and perform assessments of patients, their disease, family/genetic history, and counsel patients (and family/caregivers) about genetic testing, potential results, and implications for their disease and associated family members. Help determine appropriate ordering and genetic tests, work with payers on reimbursement, report and interpret results where appropriate, and maximize their clinical utility to improve patient care.
  • Assist with clinicogenetic research programs and Centers of Excellence associated with the Fixel Institute. Duties include working with patients and family members to enable biospecimen collection for genetic studies. Provide research genetic counseling, input on genetic results and potential implications for patients and family members. Help support grant and IRB protocol applications involving clinicogenetics.
  • Assist with the design, organization and maintenance of a clinical-research databank for neurogenetics. Develop standardized genetic counseling protocols.
  • Provide basic training on genetic testing and counseling protocols to students, fellows, and faculty. Present on neurogenetics and counseling at patient/caregiver support groups or other center events upon request

Expected Salary:

Commensurate with experience up to $75,000

Minimum Requirements: A master’s degree from a genetic counseling training program or its equivalent as determined by the Accreditation Council of Genetic Counseling or its successor or an equivalent entity; or a doctoral degree from a medical genetics training program accredited by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics or the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Good communication and clinical skills, along with willingness to work in a flexible, collaborative clinic environment.
  • EMR use (Epic)
  • Knowledge in data processing and preparation for analysis
  • Practical knowledge in computer operating systems (Windows, Macintosh OS), and software (MS Word, Power Point, Excel)
