Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking a State, Tribal, Local Plans & Grants GIS Fellow to assist in providing technical support for the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund (HPF) grant programs and management of cultural resources geospatial data.

This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic young professionals with a deep interest in advancing their career goals in cultural resource management out of the NPS State, Tribal, Local Plans & Grants Division Office.

Duration: 52 weeks

Living Allowance: The ACE Fellow is expected to contribute ~40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $1,000/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

Location: The State, Tribal, Local, Plans & Grants Division is located in Washington, DC, however this position may be completely remote. The Fellow may elect to work in the STLPG office full time, part time, or fully remote with the approval of assigned supervisor.

Housing: Housing is not provided by ACE or NPS and is the responsibility of the ACE Fellow.

Scheduling: The ACE Fellow will work Monday through Friday.

Position Description: The ACE Fellow will support the work of the State, Tribal, Local, Plans & Grants Division through the development and administration of geospatial programs and creation of products and tools related to the division’s grant and technical assistance programs. This position involves working on multiple projects simultaneously, responding to program geospatial needs, and ensuring compliance with geospatial data standards. The fellow will be expected to follow existing standard operation procedures (SOPs), but may also propose ways analyzing and gathering existing data to create visual representations of the division’s grant programs and other work suitable for use on the web or print collateral materials. The fellow will be expected to work with other NPS GIS professionals to understand and apply all relevant policy. Projects will typically entail a variety of assigned activities, such as information compilation, retrieval and organization, data entry, and maintenance of information management systems. The fellow will have the opportunity to develop skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals and groups within the Federal government as well as with external partners.

Duties will include:

  • Assist STLPG to implement and maintain existing and future GIS information management systems to support the mission of the Division, particularly the GIS products for each grant program, including making regular updates to existing Esri ArcGIS Online StoryMaps, Web Applications, and Web Maps following established SOPs.
  • Provide knowledge and support to work in an existing ESRI web-based architectural and archeological field survey tool (CRSurveyor) that is operated via ArcGIS Field Maps, and assist partners in deployment, setup, customization, updates, and resources for existing modules. May build out or assist with additional survey modules in CR Surveyor as needed.
  • Apply division-specific geospatial data standards and apply these standards to geospatial products for each of the division’s grant programs.
  • Assist staff to provide detailed information for easier compiling, summarizing, analysis or reports including geospatial data.
  • Disseminate information to the appropriate personnel and perform duties in compliance with applicable guidelines and standard operating procedures while maintaining and updating the GIS Fellow procedures guide as necessary.

Training: STLPG staff and the fellow’s direct supervisor, will provide educational opportunities for the fellow so that they understand the state and local impacts of HPF grants and geospatial needs. Additional training opportunities may be made available as appropriate.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. PLC projects also include specific eligibility requirements such as age and citizenship. Please contact ACE staff with questions about eligibility.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Must be comfortable working with ESRI GIS desktop and online products, geospatial data management, and GIS application development and deployment. No basic GIS training will be provided
  • Must have the ability to multitask and have basic understanding of cartographic principles
  • Must have sufficient skills to work mostly independently with occasional assistance from NPS staff
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals within NPS and have effective communication skills with diverse audiences
  • Must have general familiarity with historic preservation, cultural resources, American history, architecture, or similar fields
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks

Preferred:

  • Possess a degree (or be pursuing a degree) in geography, planning, natural or cultural resource management or other related disciplines
  • Experience working with ESRI GIS desktop and online products, geospatial data management, and GIS application development and deployment
  • Experience with graphic design and the use of Adobe InDesign
  • Familiarity with cultural resources management
  • Familiarity with the mission of the NPS and other federal land management agencies
