Mission and objectives

As the United Nations lead agency on international development, UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities, and to build resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Our work is concentrated in three focus areas; sustainable development, democratic governance and peace building, and climate and disaster resilience.

Context

Afghanistan faces multiple challenges, with climate, peace, and development issue tightly interwoven. Afghanistan is a very diverse country–in terms of geography, economy, people. Thus, understanding of subnational, local conditions is crucial. Policy and Knowledge Management Unit (PKU) compiles available datasets for integrated analysis of local conditions. These datasets provide different fragments of a broad picture and requires framework for analysis. For instance, for analysis of local agricultural sector hydrological data could be linked with climate change forecasts, agricultural production data and infrastructure projects.
You will support this work by researching possible approaches for analysis interlinkages in local context using geo-referenced datasets, and applying proposed approach for selected Afghanistan datasets, focusing on issues related to like Climate, Water, Agriculture development and similar. Through this work you will learn about nexus approach, analysis of complex issues in local context, get practical skills in GIS, and understanding of Afghanistan (and broader Central Asia).

Task description

• Apply proposed approach for selected Afghanistan datasets, focusing on issues related to like Climate, Water, Agriculture development
• Produce several visualizations (maps, charts, combined visualizations) illustrating proposed approach
