GIS Technician (TERM)

Organizational Mission:

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s mission is to protect, manage, and advocate for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.

Position Summary

The GIS Technician reports to the GIS Program Manager and is responsible for GIS analyses, maps, and products that play a crucial role in protecting, managing, and advocating for the Appalachian National Scenic Trail. The technician’s work will support multiple GIS-based projects across different departments within the organization. Most tasks will be completed using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online, but experience with the full ESRI suite and supporting software is desired. This role works with a core group of internal staff to update and maintain accurate geospatial data and create maps and other visual products. The GIS Technician will support critical GIS needs/projects related but not limited to ATC’s programmatic areas of the Visual Resource Inventory, Visitor Use Management, Overnight Site Planning and Management, External Boundary Corridor Monitoring, and Trail Facility data management.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Produce data layers, maps, reports, and other visual products using ArcGIS technology.
• Conduct field data collection training using GPS equipment, collect and process all information to create GIS maps.
• Assist the GIS Program Manager with developing and adhering to protocols for mutual sharing of data between cooperative management partners.
• Work with stakeholders to complete portions of the Visual Resource Inventory database.
• Address day-to-day GIS trouble shooting needs across multiple projects.
• Assist in preparing annual map updates for trail facilities along the Appalachian Trail (A.T.).
• Communicate and collaborate with project managers and GIS Manager to ensure ATC program goals are met.
• Develop and update project plans, plats, and maps using GIS software.
• Other duties as assigned by GIS Program Manager.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree, GIS certificate, coursework towards a degree, or 2 years of equivalent work experience related to GIS.
• Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems, such as ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Field Maps or similar platforms.
• Understanding of conservation principles and land management practices.
• Knowledge of remote sensing, GPS technology, and geospatial data management.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a reliable personal vehicle.
• Ability to effectively communicate with outside partners, groups, and individuals.
• Self-motivated individual who works well independently and as part of a team.
• Must successfully pass National Park Service background check for access to NPS-GIS and database servers.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Regular use of a computer is required; Microsoft Office, Office 365, ESRI GIS, NPS database, ADP, NetSuite, RIMS, and Google applications are used.
• Occasional travel for conferences, training, partner meetings, and organizational retreats may be required.
• Occasional visits to the Appalachian Trail with possible exposure to pests, extreme weather, and hazards typical of a backcountry environment.
• Fully remote within one of the 14 Trail States.

Additional Details:

• Location: This is a 4-year TERM remote position; the candidate should be located in one of the 14 Trail States.
• Annual salary: ($62,000.00).
