This role is a fixed 7.5 month contract that will work to advance the strategic objectives of the IPPF UN New York Office and the Danish Family Planning Association.
The Global Advocacy Officer will work to advance the strategic objectives of the IPPF UN New York Office and the Danish Family Planning Association with regards to advancing SRHR within relevant UN fora, as well as building cross-regional political support for SRHR, gender equality and human rights.
Context of Role
The multilateral context, in particular the UN system, is critical in terms of reaching normative, progressive, international agreements. It is an integral forum to engage Member States in discussions relating to gender equality, human rights and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
Deliverables
- Support IPPF and DFPA’s advocacy to build cross-regional support for SRHR, gender equality and human rights within all key, relevant UN spaces;
- Support advocacy to ensure the inclusion of SRHR in key UN processes and agreements;
- Support work to explore new policy spaces within the UN system, where SRHR can be advanced and prioritized, such as the UN Security Council;
- Promote IPPFs strategic priorities and key messages with UN policy makers and decision makers, including in the UN secretariat, UN agencies, permanent missions, civil society, and other relevant stakeholders.
- Build relationships with relevant civil society and UN partners, including through NGO working groups/coalitions and interagency meetings, that enhance our advocacy impact.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of activities to meet benchmarks set in the NY Advocacy Office working plan, including advocacy outreach, engagement in intergovernmental UN processes and related events, participation of IPPF Member Associations, and the evaluation of our overall impact.
- Support the development of briefs, statements and policy recommendations as needed.
- Be a credible and effective representative for IPPF, as well as DFPA and its key initiatives in UN and other relevant forums.
- Coordinate workplan activities to achieve advocacy objectives as mutually agreed by the IPPF UN Representative and DFPA.

Expertise and Skills
- Post-Graduate Degree in Public Administration, Human Rights, Law, Social Sciences or a related field
- Experience of successfully operating in advocacy work in an international environment with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Experience of solving complex issues through analysis, sound interpersonal and negotiation skills, as well as a definition of a clear way forward and ensuring political buy in.
- Demonstrated understanding commitment to gender equality, sustainable development, human rights, and humanitarian issues.
- Knowledge, experience and understanding of the UN system, and its role in sustainable development, human rights and humanitarian issues.
- Project management experience would be an advantage.
- Experience of working cross-regionally and/or in national/local/grassroots advocacy experience would be an advantage.
- Proficiency in English and knowledge of a second UN language would be an advantage.
- Ability to work to a high standard, managing stress effectively whilst prioritizing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines.
- Good networking, and diplomatic skills.
