Background

The Wildlife Justice
Commission is a young, innovative, mission-driven organization,
leveraging the rule of law and the power of investigation to stop
the extinction of our planet’s wildlife. Our mission is to disrupt
and help dismantle the criminal networks profiting from the
trafficking of wildlife, timber, and fish. We do this by gathering
evidence and turning it into accountability.

 

Purpose of role

The Global Development Director’s primary task will be to
actively cultivate and secure new fundraising relationships for the
Wildlife Justice Commission, prioritizing the United States market,
and building on the strong support already in place in Europe, from
donors such as Oak Foundation, Arcadia, WWF, and several lotteries.
The Global Development Director will also provide strategic
leadership for global fundraising efforts aimed at achieving
sustainable financial growth for a rapidly expanding nonprofit
organization with global operations and offices in the United
States of America, the European Union, and Thailand, as well as
lead a small global fundraising team based in the Netherlands and
North America. Reporting directly to the Executive Director,
primarily located in the Netherlands, you will also serve as a key
member of the Wildlife Justice Commission Senior Management
Team.

 

Primary responsibilities

Donor development and outreach (75%)

• Identify and prioritize high-potential donors aligned with the
  organization’s mission, in collaboration with the Global
  Development Team, with a priority on the US market.
• Establish and nurture strong relationships with major donors
  and foundation representatives. Convert relationships to
  sustainable funding for the organization, with a priority on the US
  market.
• Ensure strong and unified management of current donors across
  the WJC family, particularly for key accounts.
• Represent the organization in meetings, events, and briefings
  to keep donors informed and engaged, in collaboration with the
  global development team members, utilizing the Executive Director
  or other members of the senior management team as appropriate.
• Encourage and support the Board’s development efforts.

 

Global fundraising strategy, planning and budgeting (15%)

• Provide overall strategic leadership to refine and implement
  the Wildlife Justice Commission family’s fundraising strategy,
  ensuring a cohesive and integrated approach.
• Lead the annual fundraising planning process, working with the
  leadership team to develop appropriate income targets and
  understand the funding needs and priorities.
• Work with the development team to develop strategies to meet
  funding needs and achieve targets.
• Lead the development of long-term funding strategies and new
  revenue streams.
• Develop and manage the annual development budget.

 

Management and oversight (10%)

• Collaborate effectively as a member of the Senior Management
  Team.
• Provide leadership to the Board Development Committee and
  attend other relevant committees.
• Manage the Global Fundraising Team to ensure a cohesive and
  integrated approach to donor cultivation, acquisition, and
  stewardship across the Wildlife Justice Commission family and
  stakeholder environment.
• Oversee the creation and maintenance of a new fundraising
  database using standard development software (e.g., Salesforce,
  Raiser’s Edge, etc.)
• Work closely with the Global Development Team, the
  Communications Team, and the liaison to the Programmatic Team to
  develop materials that effectively communicate the organization’s
  mission, results, and impact in alignment with donor requirements
  and expectations.

Requirements and qualifications

Knowledge

• Excellent knowledge of and experience in fundraising from
  foundations and major donors, and good knowledge of other funding
  pools including government funding.
• Excellent understanding of current developments and trends in
  the non-profit and philanthropy sector in the United States.
• Excellent knowledge and understanding of donor networks and
  giving practices.

 

Skills

• A flexible thinker with a keen eye for detail.
• Demonstrated expertise in funding strategy development and its
  operationalization.
• Proven track record in fundraising in a fast-growing
  international organization or non-profit that has directly resulted
  in increased income for the organization.
• Proven ability to build, manage, and develop key stakeholder,
  client, and donor relationships.
• Exceptionally convincing and persuasive oral skills with the
  ability to present and convey complex ideas and issues clearly and
  coherently.
• Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
• Affinity with the mission statement of the organization.
• Demonstrated success in identifying and securing new foundation
  grants and major donor contributions of five-figures and
  higher.
• Ability to collaborate seamlessly with culturally diverse,
  inter-disciplinary, multi-lingual teams, leveraging effective
  communication channels, while also demonstrating a high degree of
  independence to drive initiatives forward, particularly given the
  geographical diversity.
• Fluent in English.

 

Education and experience

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in a similar role, including
  strategy development, fundraising from foundations and major donors
  and experience supervising and developing direct reports.
• A strong understanding of conservation and wildlife-related
  issues, wildlife crime, or other transnational organized crime
  areas is considered an asset.
• Hands-on experience with donor databases/software, such as
  Raiser’s Edge or Salesforce.
• Experience overseeing successful applications for US federal
  grant funding is considered an asset.
