What started as a small start-up in 2012 has now become a fast-growing organization with 200+ national staff in Uganda, the start of a team in Rwanda, and a team of 15+ people in Toronto and New York, working together to lift communities out of ultra-poverty in last-mile villages in Uganda. About The Role
Raising The Village is seeking an experienced and versatile Global HR Specialist. This role is crucial for providing comprehensive HR support across our growing operations in North America and Sub-Saharan Africa. The successful candidate will manage HR functions in generalist capacity, ensure regulatory compliance, and maintain HR strategies that align with RTV’s global mission and values.
In addition to the primary responsibilities, this role will provide coverage for the Global Senior HR Business Partner (maternity coverage) and report to the Managing Director during that time. This offers a unique opportunity to gain exposure to senior-level HR responsibilities and make a significant impact across the organization.
This is a hybrid role, with designated in-office days in our office in downtown Toronto. International travel to East Africa may be required.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic HR Leadership:
- Support the development and implementation of HR strategies that align with the RTV’s values and objectives.
- Act as a trusted advisor, providing HR guidance on best practices, compliance, and employee relations.
- Contribute to workforce planning, succession planning, and employee development initiatives.
- Foster strong relationships with employees and leaders across the organization.
Operational HR Management:
- Manage the recruitment process including but not limited to: development of preliminary job descriptions, managing job postings, coordinate and conduct preliminary interviews, conducting reference checks, and draft offer letters and employment agreements.
- Oversee the onboarding process for new hires, including liaising with IT to set up staff accounts and ensure access to necessary systems and tools and their 90 days plan.
- Manage employee data and ensure dashboard and master lists are updated regularly including the transition into Human Resources Information System (HRIS), and update system as needed.
- Assist with staff and managers in scheduling and tracking leave requests using RTV’s intranet.
- Prepare HR documents and reports, supporting the HR team in the field in data presentation and communication of accomplishments.
- Conduct general training for staff in North America (this may include areas of health & safety, code of conduct, anti-harassment, etc).
- Coordinate probationary performance review process following 6 months of employment for new employees and gathering completed forms
- Lead and facilitate the annual performance reviews and goal setting for staff in North America.
- Ensure employee development, and succession planning processes and procedures are in place and followed.
- Under the supervision of the Global Senior HRBP or designate, participate in resolving employee relations issues and assist with all workplace investigations, disciplinary, and termination procedures ensuring compliance with local laws and regulations
- Support managers with performance management, dispute resolution, and disciplinary actions.
Payroll, Compensation and Benefits:
- Support the Global Senior HRBP on the development of competitive compensation and benefits strategies through market search and data collection.
- Ensure Payroll sheets and systems are up to date and submitted in a timely manner.
- Liaise between staff members and RTV’s finance department on group health insurance, RRSP and other benefits provided to the employees under the benefits package.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Act as the interim Global HR departmental lead and support the HR team, ensuring continuity of operations and strategic initiatives.
- Develop and Implement human resources staff well being initiatives and contribute to continuous improvement and best practices in human resources.

- Strong relationship-building skills with ability to communicate effectively across all levels of an organization.
- Experience working as a strategic partner to business leaders, taking a whole system view of the organization’s challenges, opportunities and needs.
- Outstanding people skills – high degree of empathy and the ability to build trust with business stakeholders and internal employees.
- Ability to operate with pace, manage ambiguity and risk, and pivot projects and strategies as needed.
Required Skills and Expertise
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years of progressive HR management experience. International or non-profit experience is an asset.
- Strong relationship-building and communication skills.
- Experience working as a strategic partner to the HR lead and other department managers.
- Ability to manage ambiguity and pivot priorities as needed.
- Knowledge of employment laws in Canada, with the ability to learn and adapt to laws in other countries.
- Strong track record of leading HR initiatives.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google drive, HRIS, etc.
Compensation & Growth
The starting salary commensurate for this position is between 70,000-80,000 CAD per annum. Salary is calculated based on qualifications and experience. In addition, you’ll receive a compensation package that includes health benefits, optional Group RRSP (and 4-weeks vacation in line with our policies.
