About MAG:

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

About the role:

The Global Remote Sensing & GIS Specialist (GRSS) will lead research and development (R&D) projects focused on integrating environmental considerations within our practices using remote sensing and GIS data and tools. They will play a key role in advancing MAG’s mission to enhance environmental sustainability.

About you:

The successful candidate will have experience in conducting remote sensing and GIS research. Proficiency in satellite imagery data sources, including both commercial and open-access datasets as well as remote sensing and GIS software (e.g., ENVI, Erdas Imagine, ArcGIS, SNAP) is essential as the role holder will work independently. Organisation and communication skills are key as the role involves working on multiple takes and priorities with differing deadlines.

About the mission:

Globally, MAG supports the development of countries emerging from conflict by finding and destroying the explosive remnants of war, so that communities can raise their families and pursue their livelihoods in a safe and secure environment, free from fear of death or injury.

One of the main focuses in MAG’s programmes is Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM), working with national defence and security authorities towards the safe storage, management and destruction of weapons and munitions.

The PQT team has a broad responsibility for ensuring overall programme quality across a range of areas. It is responsible for maintaining the high standards of the organization’s work and ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of all programmes. PQT is divided into three main units: Standards, Training and Compliance Unit (STCU), Programmes Information Management Unit (PIMU), and Performance and Learning Unit (PLU).

This role is attached to the PIMU and has a global scope, providing remote sensing expertise to all countries where MAG operates. However, during the first year of this project, the focus will be on West African countries. The aim is to develop and pilot a spatial model to identify suitable locations for constructing armouries and explosive storage facilities, as well as for demolition sites within the study areas.
