Global Safety Coordinator / Study Abroad Program Coordinator

The Global Safety Coordinator will serve as a member of the Office for Global Health, Safety and Security and support operational management of international health and safety matters. In collaboration with the Director of Global Health, Safety and Security and the Senior Coordinator for Global Health, Safety, and Security, the Global Safety Coordinator will oversee office management, analysis, travel preparedness and plan response strategies to promote and protect the well-being of Michigan State University (MSU) travelers.

The position is designed as hybrid within MSU’s International Studies and Programs with the expectation that the Coordinator will work three days a week on campus. The hybrid schedule permits the Coordinator to work remotely two days a week.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Share 24/7 coverage for international emergencies to include identification of and response to critical incidents.
  • Coverage of main telephone number and general email address for Global Safety.
  • Maintain practical and effective international health and safety standards, expectations, policies, and guidelines for MSU student programs, activities, and independent travelers.
  • Monitor international incidents, worldwide events and trends that may affect MSU travelers abroad, disseminating alerts and announcements according to standardized protocols, and responding to incidents reported to MSU by international travelers, parents, program partners, or affiliates.
  • Develop plans, guidelines for MSU-sponsored international, web pages, etc. to provide clear safety and emergency standards and protocols (primarily faculty, staff, and guest).
  • Share training responsibilities for program organizers and leaders in critical incident management
  • Share responsibility for conducting occasional in-person pre-departure orientation for students.
  • Plan and review proposed high-risk travel with particular emphasis on faculty, staff, and guest travel. Providing as-needed support to student travel.
  • Maintain, analyze and report to Director on incident reports.
  • Deliver in-person presentations and online webinars to campus partners on travel policies and resources, emerging risks, and new initiatives.
  • Support department communication efforts through website design and updates, email listserv/newsletter, and timely university-wide communications.
  • Partner with MSU units and administrators on international health and safety issues specifically with the Office for Education Abroad, Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU), University Physician, MSU Travel Clinic, Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD), Student Affairs and Services, Student Support and Accountability, Office of Institutional Equity, and General Counsel’s Office
  • Contribute to the development of the international health, safety and risk management field through professional development, national committee and board service, professional networks, presentations, and publications
  • Occasional domestic and international travel as required for conferences and training, site assessments, etc.
  • Manage day-to-day Concur Travel Management and International SOS Tracker Systems operations
  • Administrative and analytical support to Faculty and Staff Travel Review (FASTR) Committee including meeting scheduling, minute taking, and preparing country-specific assessments
  • Create and maintain travel registration and similar analytical reports.

Qualifications

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in a related field such as International Relations, Foreign Language, Area Studies, Communication, or Higher Education Administration; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work in study abroad administration at a four-year college or university or at a study abroad organization; prior experience living, studying or working abroad in the location of the program; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Three to five years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work in:

  • Emergency Coordination
  • international Travel and Security
  • Campus Crisis Management and/or Risk Management

 

Desired Qualifications

Working proficiency in a foreign language; proficiency with computer software, data management, and social media; knowledge and interpersonal skills to work effectively with faculty and staff, students, parents, police and government agencies; strong public speaking and presentation skills; international experience, such as Peace Corps, nongovernmental or academic; experience in managing international emergencies; experience living or working abroad; ability to remain calm under pressure and in crisis situations.
