Global Senior Fellow

Position description

The Global Senior Fellow collaborates with the Global Policy Area chair and faculty to enhance the Humphrey School’s Global Public Policy concentration and program. This position involves outreach, including programming with external partners engaged in the practice of global affairs, professional training opportunities to prepare students for global careers, and teaching and advising. Responsibilities include developing 4-5 public events over the course of the academic year – presentations, panel discussions, short visits, etc. – involving practitioners or other experts in public life, seeking collaborative educational opportunities, advising students on coursework and career prospects, and informally engaging with the Humphrey International Fellows. Additionally, the Senior Fellow will teach 6 credits per year, occasionally guest lecture in other Humphrey School courses, participate in student recruitment, and foster collaboration within the Humphrey School and beyond. The role also includes representing the school through media appearances, public presentations, and community engagement to create broader educational and professional opportunities for students.

Responsibilities Breakdown

Outreach and Representation: 40% (in order of priority)

• Conceive and develop public events, including invitations to speakers on diplomacy and foreign affairs to the Humphrey School. This can be done through direct invitation and/or in partnership with individuals and organizations like Global Minnesota.
• Deepening ties to the community, including public institutions (e.g., Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, Global Minnesota), companies (e.g., 3M, Cargill), and Minnesota’s international and immigrant communities.
• Collaborate with other Humphrey School offices (Communications and Admissions) to raise the visibility of the Global Policy Area and the Humphrey School.
• Represent the Humphrey School publicly through media appearances, panel discussions, public lectures, and attendance at community and professional events.
• Present at national and international professional associations (e.g., International Studies Association).

  Teaching: 30%

• Design, develop, and teach 6-credits per academic year to include seminars, writing workshops and advanced global policy courses.
• Potential courses include PA 5813 U.S. Foreign Policy, PA 5814 Bilateral and Multilateral Diplomacy, and PA 5990/PA 8081 Global Public Policy Capstone.

  Other Related Teaching:

• Guest lecture in relevant Humphrey School courses.
• Supervise graduate professional papers and independent for-credit papers based on global area fit and alignment with expertise.

  Support the Global Policy Area (GPA): 30% 

• Secure and steward outside educational opportunities for students to deepen their learning experience and, as appropriate and in coordination with the Global Policy Chair, serve as the point of contact for these organizations to the Humphrey School (e.g., Stimson Center non-curricular activities, Council of Foreign Relations academic conference calls, Army War College negotiation simulations, Nobel Peace Prize Forum, and Global Minnesota). Work with the ADGE and Capstone Coordinator to support this task.
• Work with Global Policy Area faculty and Humphrey staff to advise students on coursework, careers, internships, study abroad, and career prospects. This may include, but not limited to connecting students to the Washington policy ecosystem and other relevant geographies.
• Engage with the Humphrey International Fellows informally through programming arranged by the Fellows leadership.
• Foster collaboration within GPA, with other Humphrey School areas, and with other colleges and programs.
• Participate in student recruitment, especially those interested in global affairs and human rights, through information sessions and outreach.
• Contribute to Humphrey School governance and participate in school-wide decision-making through Graduate Faculty meetings.

  Selection, Appointment and Term
  Senior Fellows are recommended by and affiliated with Humphrey School faculty in one or more of the School’s primary public affairs areas or degree programs: Global Public Policy; Human Rights; International Development Practice; Leadership and Management; Politics and Governance; Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy; Social Policy and Policy Analysis; or Urban and Regional Planning.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (with an advanced degree preferred)
• Distinguished and substantial experience in the field of global policy
• Outstanding track record of achievement.
