Job Description Summary
The University of Pennsylvania Library seeks qualified candidates for the position of Goldstein Director, Information Processing Center (IPC) and Library Research Annex (LIBRA). This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional who is passionate about exploring how bibliographic description, metadata, and collections storage and access shape and support scholarly inquiry. The Director is based at the Van Pelt Library on the University of Pennsylvania campus, with some work at the Library Research Annex in West Deptford, NJ. The Goldstein Director reports to the Associate Vice Provost, Operations, Access Services and Strategic Partnerships, and is a member of the senior management team of the Operations Division.
The Goldstein Director is responsible for the acquisitions, cataloging, and database maintenance operations that support a large research Library across the four departments of the Information Processing Center: Cataloging, Global Studies Technical Services, Resource Management, and Metadata Research. The Director advances strategic initiatives relating to metadata (including linked data), processing and storage in support of the Libraries’ mission to build dynamic resources, tools, and expertise that inspire critical inquiry and creative expression. The Director will also oversee and shape the strategic direction of the Penn Libraries Research Annex (LIBRA) remote storage facility in West Deptford, NJ, including overseeing its physical expansion as well as the maintenance and growth of strategic partnerships, thinking collaboratively with other peer research libraries to innovate in the area of consortial collections storage and access.
Job Description
Responsibilities:

  • Oversees a department of approximately 40 staff (8 direct reports) in a bargaining unit environment; provides direction for and mentors department managers.
  • Shapes policy and sets goals, objectives and standards for the acquisitions and cataloging of a wide range of physical and digital objects.
  • Manages all facilities, public & technical services operations of the Penn Libraries Research Annex (LIBRA).
  • Ensures the continuous improvement and effectiveness of IPC and LIBRA operations in order to increase productivity, improve access to collections and fulfill changing user expectations. Identifies and implements efficiency strategies; identifies areas of growth and develops workflows to support flexible workloads.
  • Builds upon the Penn Libraries’ contributions to the evolving linked data environment by fostering engagement and experimentation around the use of linked data in libraries.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in Access Services, Collection Management, Preservation and the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts in support of ongoing service quality enhancement projects such as reclassification, shifts, transfers and inventory control.
  • Facilitates existing partnerships and develops new partnerships at LIBRA with other campus partners, research libraries and museums.
  • Manages the Library’s budget for the IPC and LIBRA, including standard operations as well as outsourcing projects.
  • Represents the Library in key national and regional organizations and meetings for technical services and collection management professionals, such as PALCI, Program for Cooperative Cataloging, Ivy Plus Library Confederation (IPLC), and ALA.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program and a minimum of seven years of increasingly responsible professional experience in an academic research library, or the equivalent in education and experience.
  • A record of leadership and management experience in a large technical services unit within a research library environment, including experience with high-density storage operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of emerging practices, standards, and trends relating to resource description, metadata management and physical materials storage and access in a research library environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, teams and project stakeholders; an understanding of and commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.
  • Familiarity with current developments in linked data.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with budget preparation, allocation and accounting.
  • Experience managing staff in a bargaining unit environment.
  • Fluency with multiple metadata standards and metadata management tools.
  • Familiarity with Alma and Caiasoft.
  • Experience with bulk item management.
