Governor William A. O’Neill Endowed Chair
The Governor William A. O’Neill Endowed Chair in Public Policy and Practical Politics was established in 2000 by then Connecticut’s Board of Governors for Higher Education and the Connecticut State University Board of Trustees to honor the late Governor William A. O’Neill, who served from 1980 to 1991.
The O’Neill Endowed Chair seeks to promote an understanding of the history, structure, people and policies of our state’s government for both students and the larger community. The Chair’s programs include active archival and oral history projects and collaborations with CCSU’s academic departments as well as the University Library, and the United States Library of Congress.
The O’Neill Endowed Chair links the Center for Community Engagement and Social Research to students and faculty through a wide range of academic and applied research programs. To date, the Chair Holder has been a public figure recognized for an outstanding contribution to the understanding and shaping of public affairs in Connecticut.

Profile
Reporting to the Executive Director of the Center for Community Engagement and Social Research, the Endowed Chair serves as a trusted partner and strategic advisor regarding public policy development initiatives, social research in practical politics and public affairs.
The Endowed Chair serves in a part-time faculty capacity and is entitled to fully participate in benefits offered to full-time faculty. The following examples of duties illustrate the general range of tasks assigned to the Endowed Chair but are not intended to define the limits of required duties. Other essential duties may be assigned consistent with the general scope of the position.
The Endowed Chair shall teach one course a semester in an area of expertise in the Political Science department, unless a change of department is authorized by the Executive Director. Serving as a representative of CCSU, the Endowed Chair shall arrange public lectures and campus forums on matters of public policy and practical politics as well as guest speakers of notable policymakers addressing current and emerging issues in public policy and politics. Most importantly, the Endowed Chair, under the direction of the Executive Director, provides significant opportunities for CCSU to collaborate with state governmental leaders on important new policy initiatives; student experiential learning; and student mentoring. As a key stakeholder in the Center for Community Engagement and Social Research, the Endowed Chair will lead development efforts to secure additional funding and expand program outreach and initiatives.
The ideal candidate will have notably served in public service in Connecticut as an elected official or leader of a governmental agency or organization. CCSU additionally invites renowned figures in the academic community whose work has influenced the development or implementation of public policy, preferably in Connecticut.
The incumbent will be required to work in person, on campus, and may be required to work evenings, weekends, and some travel.

The Endowed Chair will be a charismatic and distinguished individual with a proven record of notable public service and public policy development and implementation.
The Endowed Chair must possess significant knowledge, skills and abilities in public and governmental affairs, and public policy development and implementation. The incumbent must possess the demonstrated ability to develop and manage strategic initiatives and to both supervise and direct the work of professional and support staff as assigned.
Most importantly, the Endowed Chair must possess the passion and commitment to the current and future success of the University, its students, faculty and staff. Other key qualifications include:
