Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

We are currently seeking a Graduate Archaeological Consultant in our Belfast office to support our impact assessment team. This role will suit a self-motivated individual looking to advance their career in a team that’s growing and has strong links across many disciplines.

This is a fantastic opportunity to further your career in archaeology, gaining valuable commercial experience within an established consultancy and a registered organisation with the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA).

Our large, national Heritage team delivers a range of exciting and varied projects across the UK and beyond. We work in dynamic and challenging environments, in multi-disciplinary teams, offering a range of services concerned with design approach, conservation strategy, asset management and planning policy. Our experts work closely alongside designers, planners and other environmental specialists to identify and realise the potential of heritage to support the creation of successful places where people want to live and work.

The Heritage team is part of AECOM’s Environment business which delivers solutions to a broad base of public and private sector clients, including the National Trust, Historic England, Department for Infrastructure Northern Ireland, HS2, the Environment Agency, local authorities and educational institutions.

As a member of one of the UK’s largest heritage consultancies, you’ll take a key role on a range of regionally significant projects, including regeneration, master-planning and infrastructure schemes, as well as important national and international projects.

Your initial role will be to assist with archaeological assessments for a variety of projects and a range of clients. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Archive research, including historic maps, archaeological reports, historic documents and aerial photographs

  • Site walkover surveys

  • Analysis, assessment, interpretation and presentation of archaeological data to contribute to desk-based assessments

More opportunities for developing your skills open after this first phase – from designing and managing fieldwork to advising on scheme development and design, working with larger teams to facilitate new development and regenerate areas. Opportunities will include:

  • Conservation strategy and asset management

  • Pre-application advice

  • Planning and legal compliance

  • Fieldwork design and management

  • Post-excavation and publication strategies

  • Public outreach and engagement

You’ll be supported in expanding your experience and developing your career within a structured, friendly team environment. We’ll pair you with an experienced team member as your guide and mentor as you start working on live projects.

Professional Development

Our Graduate Development Programme (ADVANCE) along with our huge scope of projects across the globe will challenge and inspire you to make a real difference to the world we live in. Our GDP forms a core part of our business strategy globally, designed to develop the best talent across numerous disciplines to lead our business into the future. We have more than 750 graduates on our programmes across the UK and Ireland from more than 40 different disciplines, each making a tangible difference to the environment in which we live and work.

We shall provide you with all the tools and support you need to achieve your professional development ambitions, including Chartership with the relevant international professional institution (we have graduates working towards more than 30 professional institutions in the UK and Ireland). We shall push you to achieve the highest standards and expect our graduates to pass their professional review first time. You will be assigned a mentor to support and guide your development, and you will take regular training modules throughout the programme. There will be on-the-job technical development and classroom training where required, and the opportunity to work on live client projects with significant multi-disciplinary exposure.
