Atlantic58 is a small but rapidly growing consultancy based in the Isle of Lewis in the Outer
Hebrides of Scotland. We provide a range of professional environmental consultancy services,
focusing on projects within the unique social, cultural, and ecological environment of the
Western Isles. Clients range from local community development trusts to global multinationals
and cover a wide variety of sectors including the space sector, renewables, aquaculture, and
crofting.

A position is now available for a Graduate/Trainee Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW). An
EnvCow has responsibility for monitoring and reporting on compliance on construction sites with
planning consents, environmental permits and legislation. The successful candidate will be
trained to develop and qualify in the above role.

The Role

The role is for a graduate and applicants will be required to already have a technical
environmental science degree (such as Environmental Science/Biology, Hydrology, Environmental
Engineering etc) before applying. The role will be very diverse and requires a self-motivated
candidate with the capacity to learn quickly and passion for the natural environment. The
successful candidate will shadow an existing EnvCow in addition to completing formal training
and will be encouraged to gain appropriate membership of professional bodies and relevant
qualifications. The candidate will be required to secure a CSCS card, complete ROLO and 4×4
training, in addition to completing a foundation course for Environmental Clerk of Works SCQF
Level 11.

The candidate must be willing and have the fitness to undertake field work and have the
confidence to work on construction sites, use basic scientific monitoring equipment, and liaise
with contractors, clients and stakeholders. In line with the multidisciplinary nature of the
business, candidates are expected to develop a range of skills to support the wider development
of the business. The role is based on the Isle of Lewis and therefore it is essential that the
successful candidate is based on the island(s).

Core Responsibilities

Support the current Environmental Clerk of Works with the following:

  • Monitoring and reporting environmental compliance during all stages of construction.
  • Auditing of construction site/project to assess performance against approved plans,
    legislation and permits.
  • Liaison with client, stakeholders and contractors.
  • Contribute to and, where appropriate, take ownership of day-to-day project / site work to
    support projects including reporting, analysis and interpretation of environmental information.
  • Use QGIS to generate maps, maintaining an accurate recording system and filing convention.
  • Develop personal and professional competencies with a relevant trade association e.g. IEMA
    CIEEM and/or AEnvCoW
  • Undertake training to develop skills across a range of disciplines, and continual
    professional development.

The Location

The office is set within Lews Castle Grounds within the Isle of Lewis – a designated Garden and
Designed Landscape – covering over 270 hectares of woodland and ornamental gardens. The
immediate surroundings include a network of coastal, moorland and woodland paths, mountain bike
trails, a salmon and trout fishery and golf club. We are located a few meters from Lews Castle
and the Museum Tasglann nan Eilean.

Our office space is dog friendly and includes a private enclosed area. We also form part of the
University of Highlands and Islands (UHI) campus in Stornoway and have close links with
academia both for collaborative course development and other emerging industry – academia
projects.

Essential

  • The candidate will hold as a minimum, a relevant technical environmental science
    degree (e.g. Hydrology, Environmental Engineering, Soil Science)
  • Excellent communication and confidence for client communication, contractor and stakeholder
    liaison.
  • IT and excellent reporting skills with high levels of attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines and adapt to a range of project
    requirements.
  • Relevant experience in peatland management, drainage management, environmental engineering,
    construction site management, environmental regulation and compliance. Candidates with strong
    evidence of other relevant ecological or environmental skills and experience will also be
    considered.
  • Understanding of environmental legislation, regulation and good practice.
  • A full UK driving licence and ability to travel.
  • Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.

Desirable

  • CSCS Card / ROLO.
  • 4×4 training / skills.
  • Competent in data analysis and mapping using QGIS (ArcGIS also acceptable).
  • The candidate will have, or be willing, to work towards a relevant professional membership.

Salary and benefits

  • Full time (35 hours per week).
  • Salary range £23,000 to £26,000 with increase following probationary and training period.
    Appointment will not necessarily be on the lowest point of the scale but will be commensurate
    with skills and experience.
