About the Department of Linguistics
The Department of Linguistics, within the College of Arts and Sciences, is a small social science department with 13 1/3 tenure-track faculty, 3 staff members, and 4 labs for linguistic research. Faculty members are responsible for teaching over 30 courses each year. The graduate field has approximately 40 students, the major has approximately 35 undergraduates, and the minor is growing with approximately 30 students. The research and teaching interests of faculty and graduate students include historical linguistics, phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, computational linguistics, field research, and experimental linguistics, and collaborations happen with a variety of departments across campus. The department also teaches American Sign Language, with 9 classes taught each semester and a new ASL/Deaf Studies minor.

As the heartbeat of our department, you will be the first point of contact for students and the public, offering insightful responses and guidance. Your role is critical in providing comprehensive administrative support to our esteemed faculty, including the Department Chair, Directors of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies, and Directors of our cutting-edge Phonetics and Computational Linguistics Labs.
You will champion the growth of our vibrant ASL Program and the burgeoning ASL/Deaf Studies minor, serving as a pivotal resource for all program-related inquiries. With a keen eye for detail, you will manage our database of courses, students, and honors awardees, ensuring every piece of information is accurate and accessible.
