Role Overview
GC seeks a Grants Accountant to perform the accounting and financial service functions for programs funded by grants, contracts, or other significant contributions from both private and public sectors. The Grant Accountant will prepare financial projections and budgets, report on actual against budgeted expenses, review and monitor to ensure compliance requirements are met, and execute financial reporting as needed. The Grant Accountant will verify budget proposals for grant applications in collaboration with the GPA team and will provide critical reporting used by leadership in the Finance Department, Managers, and Executive Leadership.
The successful candidate is detail-oriented, a self-starter, and able to accurately complete a range of administrative and financial tasks necessary for successful and timely reporting of grants. This position reports to the Vice President for Finance and Administration. The entire GC finance team works closely together to meet financial reporting objectives, so a collaborative attitude is required.
Key Responsibilities
Grant Accounting Weighed 60%
- Plan, organize, and coordinate the centralized accounting and financial reporting for grants and fee for service contracts, including preparing annual and project budgets, forecasting revenue, estimating any carry-over of funds from one year to the next.
- Assist in preparing all relevant fiscal reports for sponsored programs; ensure the timely submission of all reports, as requested or required.
- Coordinate with internal and external auditors and grantors during the grant-related audits. Monitoring and supporting adherence to audit and grant requirements.
- Coordinate with key personnel at all levels of the organization to support the proper and timely expenditure of grant funds in compliance with applicable guidelines and budget deadlines.
- Develop positive working relationships to foster a collaborative environment for grant coordination and oversight.
General Accounting Weighed 30%
- Support in the management of private corporations, individuals, and foundations, in addition to public sector funds.
- Conduct regular financial analysis to identify variances and address potential budgetary concerns.
- Assist with the monthly closing process
- Perform monthly reconciliation of bank accounts as directed
Other Responsibilities Weighed 10%
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements For Success
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or nonprofit financial management, an advanced degree is highly preferred.
- A minimum of two (2) years of nonprofit accounting experience or experience managing grants and financial reporting; the ideal experience includes processing complex financial transactions, ensuring compliance with legal or contractual requirements, recordkeeping, and preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills is required
- Proven track record of grants management
- Skill in researching, analyzing, and evaluating complex financial data.
- Proficiency in various computer applications, including comprehensive databases, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
- Ability to prioritize and self-direct, analyze situations, identify situations where appropriate to make decisions.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to establish and maintain effective interdepartmental communications and relationships.
- High attention to detail, ability to analyze and interpret data for accuracy.

- Global Citizen operates on a hybrid work model – 3 days (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday) in our NYC office and 2 days (Monday & Friday) telecommuting.
