The Company

Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (ALFA) is an Aboriginal owned carbon business working in partnership with Traditional Landowners and Aboriginal ranger groups over more than 86,000 km2 of Arnhem Land. ALFA is the registered project proponent for six projects which generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) through the Savanna Burning Methodology.

ALFA’s origin lies in the ground-breaking West Arnhem Land Fire Abatement (WALFA) project – the world’s first savanna burning abatement project.

Their purpose is to support Traditional Owners and Aboriginal rangers to deliver best-practice fire management projects that generate environmental, cultural, and social benefits, producing Australian carbon credits (ACCUs) of the highest integrity.

The Role

The Grants and Impact Manager is a newly created position that has been designed to support ALFA to deliver its strategic objectives.

ALFA has recently developed a strategic Business Plan that guides the next five years of operations. The plan reflects on the strengths ALFA and its project partners have developed and contemplates the path forward in a rapidly evolving sector. The plan has three strategic objectives which the role of Grants and Impact Manager will work towards achieving, they are:

  • Operational capability and resilience.
  • Respect and management of stakeholders.
  • Protect and growing the market position.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Administer the delivery of the ALFA Grants Program to support land management and community development outcomes in Arnhem Land.
  • Draft, manage and administer grants program guidelines, applications, assessment, funding agreements, and reporting.
  • Develop and maintain a database to support ALFAs co-benefit framework, recording appropriate key performance indicators aimed at demonstrating environmental, cultural, social, and economic outcomes from the fire projects and grant reinvestment in Arnhem Land.
  • Establish and maintain effective, collaborative working arrangements with Aboriginal partner organisations.
  • Prepare and present a range of internal and external publications, including program reports, reviews and evaluation.
  • Provide assistance to the ALFA Board and CEO as required.

Required Skills and Proficiencies

Essential:

  • Previous grants experience including experience in reporting on impact.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the environmental, social, and economic issues affecting remote First Nation communities in Australia.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including a demonstrated ability to work in a cooperative and effective manner with colleagues in cross cultural environments.
  • Excellent writing skills, with a demonstrated ability to write clearly and simply to communicate impact.
  • Experience with project planning, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Experience in evidence-gathering and data collection systems and processes.

Desirable:

  • A relevant qualification in science, conservation, and land management or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of land and sea management activities and programs on Aboriginal lands and seas and experience working with Aboriginal Ranger groups.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, policies, plans, and strategies impacting biodiversity and conservation management issues on Aboriginal lands and seas.
