Job Description
The Grants Officer will play a vital role in increasing revenue
for Inside Climate News by helping to manage and grow the
organization’s grant portfolio.
This role will be responsible for the full range of activities
required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to the
foundations and other entities that support ICN, while actively
researching, identifying, and pursuing new funding
opportunities.
Daily responsibilities include:
- Managing the proposal writing and reporting schedules for ICN’s
portfolio of funders and communicate these in a timely manner - Identifying and cultivating new funding sources
- Establishing professional relationships with ICN’s existing
grant funders - Earning the trust of colleagues and establishing smooth and
solid working relationships at all levels of the
organization.
This position works remotely and will report to the senior
Grants Officer, working closely with the Publisher and VP of
Development, Operations & Marketing and the Publisher.
Qualifications
These qualifications, or their equivalents, are essential:
- 5-7 years of professional experience writing grant proposals,
reports, donor correspondence and/or marketing materials in a
nonprofit environment, particularly within the journalism or
climate funder community - Bachelor’s degree in communications, business, nonprofit
management, or relevant fields - Excellent writing, editing, research, proofreading and
storytelling skills a must - Ability to develop budgets, prepare financial reports, and
understand financial statements - Strong organizational and time-management skills with
exceptional attention to detail and accuracy - A professional and resourceful style with the ability to work
independently and as a team player, to take initiative and to
manage multiple tasks and projects at a time - The ability to communicate well and in a professional manner
with a variety of co-workers and foundation personnel
Our News Organization
Founded in 2007, Inside Climate News is an independent,
nonprofit, non-partisan news organization covering the biggest
crisis facing our planet. With nearly 30 full-time staff members,
we operate one of the largest and most influential environmental
newsrooms in the country.
We have a nucleus in New York, a presence in Washington D.C.,
and staff working from California to Florida, in Texas, Alabama and
Kentucky, Colorado, Ohio and Massachusetts. Good ideas propel the
operation, wherever they originate.
As part of its work in the public interest, ICN is establishing
a collaborative national reporting network, strengthening the
practice of climate and environmental justice journalism and
training the next generation of journalists.
We have earned national recognition for our work and many of the
most prestigious awards in journalism, including the Pulitzer Prize
for National Reporting (2013) and recognition as a finalist for the
Pulitzer Prize for Public Service (2016).
Compensation
Salary range: $55,000-$70,000 per year, commensurate with
experience. Benefits package includes medical, dental, and vision
insurance plans; 401k matching; and generous paid time off.
