Duties and Responsibilities
This remote position is located in the Design and Multimedia Unit (DMU) of the Strategic Communications Branch (SCB) within the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions. The Strategic Communications Branch (SCB) is OCHA’s communications and public advocacy team supporting headquarters and field operations in public outreach on humanitarian action. The Design and Multimedia Unit (DMU) of the Strategic Communications Branch (SCB) leads the development of OCHA’s visual information services and products. Within delegated authority, the Graphic Designer will be responsible for the following:
- Develop High-Quality Visual Information Products: Create visually appealing and impactful information products, such as infographics, posters, brochures, and other materials, that effectively communicate humanitarian messages and information to diverse audiences.
- Design Interactive Websites and Animations: Utilize graphic design skills to develop interactive websites and animations that engage and inform users about humanitarian issues, emergencies, and OCHA’s activities.
- Participate in Information Management and Visualization Projects: Collaborate with crossfunctional teams to contribute to information management and visualization projects, ensuring that data and complex concepts are translated into accessible and comprehensible visuals.
- Contribute to Visual Strategy: Work within the DMU to help define and implement visual communication strategies that align with OCHA’s goals and messaging, enhancing the organization’s overall public outreach efforts.
- Maintain Brand Consistency: Ensure that all visual materials produced adhere to OCHA’s branding guidelines, maintaining consistencyin design elements, color schemes, and typography to strengthen OCHA’s visual identity.
- Stay Updated on Design Trends and Technologies: Continuously research and stay informed about the latest design trends, tools, and technologies in the graphic design and multimedia field, integrating innovative approaches into OCHA’s visual communication initiatives. The selected candidate will primarily engage in graphic design production for regions affected by humanitarian crises, with a particular emphasis on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region.
Qualifications/special skills
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent degree) in graphic design, multimedia design, communications or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in graphic design, information and communication technology, multimedia design, user experience and design or related area. A minimum of 5 years of experience working with Adobe Software applications is required. Submission of a portfolio with samples of work in graphic design is required (link to PDF or website). Experience with the Humanitarian Programme Cycle (HPC) process is desirable. Experience working with graphic design and data analysis in the UN Common System or other comparable international organization is desirable.
Languages
- For the position advertised, fluency in English and Arabic is required (both oral and written). Knowledge of French is desirable.
