Organizational Setting

FAO’s Land and Water Division (NSL) foresees a future whereby governments, development partners, civil society, academic institutions and the private sector and farmers, all work together to ensure that land, soil, and water resources are wisely used, conserved and restored for sustainable and resilient agrifood systems that support food security, nutrition and human wellbeing.

NSL provides policy guidance, technical and financial assistance to Member Countries in developing policies, programmes, best practices and management tools for ensuring productive and efficient use of land, soil and water resources to meet present and future demands for agricultural products, while ensuring the long-term sustainability of these resources. It promotes equitable access to and sustainable management of these natural resources with a view to enhancing productivity, livelihoods, equity, health and ecosystem services.

Under the new FAO’s Conceptual framework for integrated land and water resources management, NSL will work towards a core set of five integrated and strategic Objectives and Action Areas that have been elaborated to cut across the thematic land, water, soils, and geospatial areas of work of the Division: (1) Good Governance; (2) Wise use and restoration; (3) Mitigation and resilience; (4) Integrated solutions; (5) Data, digitalization, technology and innovation.

Contracts will be based in the Land and Water Division (NSL) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

The purpose of this call is to provide FAO’s Land and Water Division (NSL) with a roster of qualified candidates who can support NSL in the communication of FAO’s work on land, water, soil and geospatial.

Reporting Lines

The incumbent will report to the Knowledge Management Officer in the FAO Land and Water Division.

Technical Focus

The Graphic Designer will support the teams in the development, editorial production, creation of new websites, migration of the current websites from Typo3 to Sitefinity, and of information materials both for technical audiences and for the general public, while working in close collaboration and liaison with FAO staff at Rome headquarters and regional and country offices, as well as key partners.

Tasks and responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Knowledge Management Officer and in close collaboration with the Technical Officer for Web and Print Design, the incumbent will perform the following tasks:

• Create functional and clear templates that can convey the product’s message.
• Produce creative concept designs and layouts for reports and briefs.
• Collaborate on the preparation and editing of documents, publications, and outreach materials in relation to NSL activities: collect materials, produce layouts, liaise with editors, follow up production steps and coordinate with relevant staff and providers.
• Ensure that all publications and materials are produced in line with FAO style, corporate communication guidelines, logo policy and other relevant guidelines.
• Coordinate and upload finalized publications in the FAO Publications Workflow System (PWS).
• Collaborate on the development of visual identities for products and events.
• Collaborate on the preparation of content and visuals for websites.
• Assist in the organization and re-structure of all elements and information for the migration of websites from Typo3 to Sitefinity and follow the migration process, including clearance process by OCC.
• Assist updating current websites in typo3.
• Improve and edit artwork, photos, charts, and other graphic elements.
• Provide graphic design and layout support for written and multimedia products (PPTs, banners, web pages) and promotional materials using the existing visual identity and templates.
• Provide design support for social media (cards, GIFs and videos) and develop innovative reusable assets while conforming to FAO social media corporate guidelines.
• Collaborate on the production of video and motion graphic animations.
• Perform other duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• University degree (or higher if specifically required) in art, graphic design, communication, audiovisual, web design or related field,or relevant technical training/qualification
• Minimum two to five years of relevant experience in graphic design.
• Knowledge of the basic core of Adobe Creative Cloud applications for print and web production. A minimum of 2 years working knowledge and practical application of Adobe Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. (Knowledge of the use video production software such as Adobe Premiere and After Effects is not compulsory, but would be preferable)
• Working knowledge of English and limited knowledge of one of the other FAO languages (French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian).

Selection Criteria

• Extent and relevance of experience in developing high-quality communication multimedia materials for a wide variety of audiences.
• Experience with a variety of graphic softwares.
• Level of knowledge of editorial processes and layout tools.
• Extent and relevance of experience in the creation of a broad range of visual and publication products.
• Good working knowledge of English. Knowledge of Arabic, French or Spanish will be an asset.
• Ability to work on multiple projects, meet deadlines and ensure quality outputs.
• Knowledge of the Content Management System Sitefinity is considered an asset.
