Job Introduction: The University of Idaho is hiring 3 technicians for wolf research in Idaho with an approximate field season from May 25th – September 5, 2024. Technicians will work and travel between four study areas throughout Idaho. Technicians will survey wolf pack rendezvous site habitat, perform howling surveys, and collect wolf scat samples. Crews will tent camp and backpack into wilderness and backcountry (for 1-3 days) while in study areas and there IS FREE housing available for days off in Salmon, Idaho. Incumbents will work nine days in a row. Salary is approximately $1,980 month and is based on 40 hours of work at $9/hr + 10 hours of work at an overtime pay rate of $13.50/hr. Qualifications: Valid driver’s license, get along well with others in a field setting, with or without reasonable accommodations hike 8-20 miles per day for 9 days in a row, interact professionally with the public, camp for extended periods of time, experience setting and maintaining remote trail cameras, experience tracking and surveying for large mammals (carnivores is a plus), experience navigating using a GPS and map in remote settings, experience with 4×4 trucks and driving safely in rugged conditions, ability to follow a rigid protocol and record detailed data in a field setting, experience entering data into an excel spreadsheets or access databases, ability to make decisions in the field when unable to contact a supervisor. Applicant must be comfortable working and camping safely in grizzly bear habitat (bear spray provided). Applicant may also be part of a film documentary being produced for a television series and might interact with film company employees while in the field. A graduate with an undergraduate degree in a natural resource field and prior field work is preferred.
