About the Opportunity

We are currently looking for an experienced individual with an exceptional knowledge of Aboriginal culture and communities to join the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) in the role of Head of Aboriginal Heritage, based in either Darwin or Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

You will join the Northern Territory’s premier cultural and scientific institution and be responsible for developing and implementing crucial strategy and operational plans to assist the museum in aligning with “Aboriginal engagement, employment, governance and cultural awareness and respect”.

The key responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring MAGNT’s Aboriginal Heritage collections are managed and developed in a culturally sensitive manner
  • Formalise and strengthen professional relationships with other institutions and Aboriginal organisations and communities
  • Secure funding for Aboriginal Heritage projects
  • Planning and implementing MAGNT’s repatriation activities

Who are we looking for

We are looking for an individual with a deep understanding of contemporary Aboriginal issues and an understanding of the ethical issues involved and how to address these. Experience in project management methods will also be beneficial.

Strong relationship building and leadership skills will enable you to effectively lead the Aboriginal Heritage team to develop their programs while developing and maintaining relationships with other key institutions and Aboriginal organisations and communities.

You will bring:

  • A demonstrated experience managing, developing and mentoring diverse teams and a strong understanding of relevant legislation and regulations
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience in grant application and governance

MAGNT considers that being Aboriginal or a Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational requirement for this position under sub-s 35(1)(b)(ii) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1996 (NT).
