The role of Head of Commercial Finance is embedded within the Shakespeare Martineau (SHMA) brand, and will be supported by the firms group Finance team who will provide mentoring, coaching and professional development support.The roles key objective is to work with the SHMA Executive and operational team which comprises of two Managing Directors (MD’s), Super Team Leaders (STL’s) and Team Leaders (TL’s) to drive growth, improve profitability and working capital management.In the role of Head of Commercial Finance you will take the lead on SHMA brand and related brands that form part of the SHMA business model, business planning, operational review and process improvement as well as taking ownership for the delivery of the SHMA business plan and reforecasts.What you will be doing:Performance management and improvement

  • Take an active part in strategic planning working closely with MD’s and STL’s
  • Support the brand MDs to drive performance improvement, deliver growth both at a revenue and contribution level as well as driving working capital improvement
  • Drive and maintain business focus on pricing, WIP management, timely billing and debt collection in line with group objectives/goals
  • Identifying areas of under-performance across the brand, providing recommendations for improvement and working with SHMA executive and individual partners, to deliver the improvement
  • Taking the lead on brand business planning, operational review and process improvement and reforecasts in line with the group timetable
  • Delivery of short and long term financial forecasts for the brand and related brands – including P&L, Balance Sheet and Cash flows a variety of financial and operational performance based reports as part of review meetings with the SHMA exec to challenge under performance, and set and agree performance improvement plans
  • Use a variety of financial and operational performance based reports as part of review meetings with the SHMA exec to challenge under performance, and set and agree performance improvement plans Taking a lead role on large tenders and pricing opportunities across the SHMA brand, working with the group sales and BD function
  • Work with MD’s and TL’s to ensure continual improvement and adoption of best practice financial hygiene

Financial and Commercial Upskilling

  • Working with the learning and development team to coach STL’s and TL’s, members/partners and fee earners to upskill knowledge and performance in relation to financial management, pricing and delivery of their team performance plan i.e. providing financial insight and support such as basic awareness P&L management, inductions into finance responsibilities, understanding the balance sheet etc.
  • Collaborating and liaising with the firm’s group finance teams and commercial manager colleagues across brands as and when required Responding in a timely manner to ad hoc analysis and information requests Capital and long term investment
  • Supporting MD’s and group finance on due diligence for M&A activity and integration – including opportunity assessment, deal structuring and due diligence
  • Identifying alternative income sources e.g. grants, regional development and growth fund income Supporting on the creation of or reduction in separate business entities under the SHMA brand

Reporting

  • To be responsible for the delivery of monthly, quarterly and periodic analysis and commentary on performance across the brand and teams
  • Presenting to brand operational board and at times group board on a range of topics from business planning, current performance and investments, working capital and cash flow as well as ad hoc presentations in relation to current year-to-date performance

What you will need:

  • To be a qualified accountant with one of the following qualifications would be advantageous (ACA/ACCA/CIMA
  • Demonstrable experience with a commercial mind-set in a similar role, in particular working closely with either main board level or subsidiary board stakeholders
  • Intermediate-level Excel skills at a minimum, in particular being able to create appropriate financial models and communicate effectively
  • The ability to be comfortable working across a number of IT platforms
  • To be confident in prioritising workload amongst senior stakeholders

Skills and experience

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport, credibility and manage expectations with senior stakeholders
  • To be a commercially aware self-starter, pro-active with the ability to work in a team and comfortable working at both a strategic and detailed operational level
  • Flexibility and the ability to operate in a changing environment
  • To be highly enthusiastic, willing to go the extra mile and be happy to go beyond the job description
  • To be respectful towards others and have a positive, willing and ‘can do’ attitude
  • Experience in the legal sector in a similar role is desirable
