About this role
This exciting new role will be instrumental in leading JCN’s communications work towards one of our key objectives: Telling the story of Jewish leadership on climate issues. This objective aims to inspire both Jewish community members and leaders, as well as broader Australian society, to lift our individual and collective ambition on climate issues, and deepen Jewish pride in our contribution to this generational challenge.
This is a role for someone with a strong media or digital media background, with a demonstrated history of identifying and curating compelling human stories that inspire and shift perspectives.
You will be prepared to ‘get on the tools’ of writing excellent copy, generating highly engaging content and working passionately to place those stories in a variety of media platforms that will reach mainstream Australian and Jewish community audiences.
You will also be responsible for growing JCN’s “trusted climate voice” status in the community – at a time when misinformation and disinformation are at an all-time high, and the importance of credible, evidence- based climate news and information for the Australian Jewish community is as important as ever.
Roles and Responsibilities
The role and its key responsibilities are:
- Interviewing and packaging up for publication human interest and thought-leadership stories from a wide range of community stakeholders on climate issues
- Pitching stories to a wide range of conventional and unconventional media sources to achieve maximum reach and impact (e.g. Australian print media, Jewish media, social media and digital, podcasts, live events etc)
- Curating and publishing a consistent flow of credible climate news, solutions and information on JCN’s social media platforms and through its EDM list (information drawn from JCN’s trusted, non-partisan climate information partners)
- Establishing systems for monitoring, reporting and improving communications reach and impact developing and managing JCN communications and media strategy together with JCN’s pro bono communications and media expert partners
- Embedding JCN’s communications strategy in all of JCN’s work, activities and projects
- Overseeing the growth and usability of JCN’s online climate resources, by periodically updating them and generating new resources from time to time with information drawn from JCN’s climate research partners
Core Competencies
The successful candidate will:
- Have a clear, demonstrable capacity to find human interest stories on a consistent basis and place them in media and community contexts that achieve wide reach
- Have a sound understanding of current climate change issues and solutions
- 5 years+ experience in media, digital media, journalism or equivalent
- Have a good understanding of the Australian Jewish community and its values and practices
- Be comfortable understanding basic design and social media content creation, scheduling and monitoring
- Have strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to relate to a wide variety of stakeholders be resourceful and
- Comfortable solving problems with limited resources
- Be collaborative and work well in a small team
- Be self-motivated and capable of working independently
- Be comfortable using Google Suite applications and major social media platforms, as well as willing to learn new applications where necessary
Nice to have
While not essential, we will look favourably on candidates with:
- Social media production skills and analytics
- Experience in a climate/sustainability-focused organisation or company
