Head of Performing Arts (Music and Drama)

Full time contractual position – starting August 2024

This senior teaching position is critical to the holistic progress of the students and to the development of the school in general. The role is a part of the Academic Leadership Team, which comprises the head teacher, deputy heads, heads of departments and key-stage coordinators.

It involves being an inspiring music teacher, and a supportive leader and organiser in the music and drama department, a collaborator with all teachers, support and management staff, and a diplomatic communicator with parents, other schools and artistic and performance communities.

Responsible to: Head Teacher, School Director

This role is Grade 5A with a gross salary range of 190,000- 244,000 KES depending on experience and expertise.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

Teaching and Learning:

  • Nurture mutually respectful relationships being an inspiring role model to all
  • Teach Music as per iGCSE and British National curriculum in Key Stages 2,3 and 4
  • Plan and prepare lessons that cater for the needs of the whole ability range
  • Manage the provision of music lessons, both group and individual in a range of instruments
  • Coordinate activities and resources within the performing arts curriculum and events
  • Collaborate to incorporate performing arts into the curriculum and school events
  • Motivate pupils with enthusiastic, imaginative presentations
  • Managing the organisation of the MAD block (Music and Drama) for optimal enjoyment and effectivity for all
  • Take part in extra curricular activities contributing to the holistic education of all
  • Manage resources and ensure quality termly reports and consistent parent feedback

Departmental Leadership:

The Performing Arts Head of Department has responsibility for inspiring an appreciation and enjoyment of performing arts at every level, developing and promoting it within the school.

Additionally the school aspires to become a beacon for performing arts in the region, and to champion its valued role in holistic education beyond the school community.

The successful candidate will therefore nurture networks and spearhead projects that help make music and the arts accessible both within and beyond our school community wherever possible.

The successful candidate in their leadership role will:

  • Inspire staff and promote the value of performing arts in keeping with the ethos of the school
  • Spearhead projects to celebrate music and make performing arts accessible within beyond the school
  • Contribute to school policy-making, budgets and strategic planning
  • Coordinate engaging displays around the school
  • Communicate the performing arts achievements in various formats
  • Manage and support peripatetic teachers
  • Develop community projects celebrating the arts
  • Contribute to school media and marketing
  • Promote the school through performance and events year round as relevant
  • Maintain high morale and professionalism

Teamwork and Professional Development:

  • Support colleagues in delivering high-quality music and drama lessons
  • Host and evaluate departmental meetings and staff appraisals
  • Use data and observation to support staff and pupils
  • Support staff and interns with curriculum and policies
  • Ensure a safe learning environment per Health and Safety policies
  • Offer workshops/ professional development sessions to other staff as required

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Post Graduate Degree in Education
  • Teachers Service Commission Registration
  • 4+ years in an International School System
  • Demonstrable track record of excellent teaching practice
  • Fantastic Interpersonal skills, adaptability and sense of humour
  • Commitment to the school Ethos of promoting inclusivity, diversity and environmental sustainability
