The SCCC Health Coach partners with patients to address health and wellness goals that are motivating and personally meaningful. The coach establishes a supportive, collaborative relationship, works with the patient to set meaningful goals and design and support small action steps toward those goals. The coach uses an evidence-based process that facilities sustainable behavior changes while fostering patient autonomy and self-discovery. Coaching may occur individually and in small groups, and in a variety of formats: virtually, telephonically, and/or face-to-face.

Department Specific Functions

Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has an exciting opportunity for a full time Health Coach for Cancer Prevention. The Health Coach for Cancer Prevention will play a vital role in supporting our high-risk patients, who have either experienced cancer and are at risk of recurrence or are at high risk of developing cancer due to factors such as gene mutations or hereditary predispositions. This role involves providing guidance, education, and personalized coaching to individuals seeking to make positive changes in their nutrition, exercise, weight management, and smoking cessation habits. The primary aim is to empower these individuals to adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle that significantly reduces the risk of cancer recurrence or new cancer development while promoting overall well-being.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                           

Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients’ health status, lifestyle, and cancer risk factors to tailor coaching programs to their specific needs. Provide nutrition and exercise guidance that align with patients’ specific needs and goals. Develop trust and rapport through mindful listening and other-focused communication Establish a safe, values-based, and strengths-focused relationship Promote patient autonomy and individual responsibility Employ evidence-based behavior change skills to: Help patient explore their values and optimal health vision Assess patient readiness and willingness to change Elicit patients’ goals to improve health and overall wellbeing

Connect patients’ values and vision to long-term goals Support individual action steps with tracking, accountability, and consideration of potential barriers and backup plans

Empower patients to self-discover behavior change strategies for ongoing success Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Department Specific Qualifications                                                                                     

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in relevant filed such as Nutrition, Health Education, Exercise Science, or a related discipline.

Certification and Licensing: Ideally, holds a recognized Health Coach certification (e.g., National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching, Wellcoaches, or equivalent).

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in relevant filed such as Nutrition, Health Education, Exercise Science, or a related discipline.

Certification and Licensing:

Ideally, holds a recognized Health Coach certification (e.g., National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching, Wellcoaches, or equivalent).

Experience:

Minimum 2 years of relevant experience

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Mindful embodiment of coach qualities (presence, authenticity, and empathy)
  • Strong knowledge of nutrition, exercise physiology, and behavior change theories.
  • Effective use of coaching skills when communication, including Motivational Interviewing.
  • Ability to self-manage and adhere to coaching ethics and scope of practice (outlined by NBHWC).
  • Knowledge of heathy lifestyle guidelines (outlined by NBHWC).
  • Planning and organization skills.
  • Willingness to see themselves as part of a team and comfortable with collaboration.
