Job Overview:

The Health Promotion Coordinator in collaboration with the Senior Resettlement Manager, will oversee all refugee and migrant health education initiatives including health education and healthcare navigation workshops, public benefits enrollments and health service coordination. This role will be responsible for developing and/or curating culturally responsive and in-language education materials for refugee and migrant clients in the NY office. Additionally, this role includes staff supervision, partnership development and assisting the Senior Resettlement Manager in maintaining service provision and contract compliance for the Refugee Health Promotion (RHP) grant and other identified funding opportunities.

Major Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Keep up-to-date on refugee and migrant eligibility for public benefits, including SNAP, WIC, TANF, Cash Assistance, Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income (SSI); sharing relevant changes to program staff on a regular basis.
  • Supervise, train, and support 2-3 Healthcare & Benefits Navigators; Provide appropriate supervision and health care coordination to ensure acute client needs are met in a timely and culturally appropriate manner.
  • Support Healthcare & Benefits Navigators to resolve any issues that arise concerning billing for medical services and coordination between Medicaid or other insurance plans and health providers.
  • Maintain and initiate partnerships with community partners to increase client access to health and/or social services
  • In collaboration with Healthcare & Benefits Navigators and Safety & Wellness program staff, plan and implement health education workshops on selected topics.
  • Identify, curate, and develop healthcare navigation and health literacy materials from reputable sources for effective health education workshops.
  • Support staff in making appropriate referrals for clients to any other services that may be eligible for or interested in receiving internally at IRC and externally with partnering organizations.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Resettlement Manager and Safety & Wellness Manager to create and implement assessment tools to increase understanding of refugee and migrant health knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and current level of access to services.
  • In collaboration with Senior Resettlement Manager, track activities for various projects and ensure donor deliverables are met, compile data, and draft reports as required by donor and agency specifications.
  • Conduct quality assurance activities to ensure that all case files, tracking tools and data management systems are accurate and up-to-date.
  • Attend and represent IRC at relevant social and human services meetings, highlighting service gaps to relevant stakeholders
  • Liaise with relevant NYC and NYS service providers and stakeholders to ensure client access to public benefits in which they are eligible; including direct case advocacy with NYC Human Resources Administration and New York State of Health
  • Comply with all IRC policies, procedures, and protocols including adherence to the IRC Way and Child Safeguarding.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Other Internal and/or external contacts:

Internal: IRC staff, interns and volunteers

External: Community partners, sub-grantees, stakeholder partners, State Refugee Health Coordinator, Medical Providers, Ethnic Based Community Organizations

Job Requirements:

Education: Undergraduate degree in a related field or five years of experience in health-related case management or health promotion position working with a diverse/migrant community, is required. A Master’s in Public Health or Equivalent strongly preferred.

Work Experience: Two+ years of professional work experience; preferably in public health, non-profit, or social services environment

Demonstrated Skills and Proficiencies:

  • Demonstrated ability to promote an organizational culture that reflects IRC’s core values of service, accountability, integrity, and equality. Ability to lead in a way that recognizes that IRC’s work is best accomplished through the true collaboration of individuals from many cultures with a great variety of skills and perspectives.
  • Experience working with refugees and/or immigrants; cross-cultural or overseas experience accepted.
  • Experience coordinating Health Promotion and Community Health Worker programming.
  • Experience with community-based research including survey design or other data collection and analysis methods
  • Computer proficiency with an emphasis on Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook). Proven experience in web-based data entry systems, with both data extraction and design preferred.
  • Highly organized self-starter with proven success prioritizing multiple tasks, making critical decisions, and delivering results in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
  • Flexibility with demonstrated ability to maintain responsibility for multiple tasks in the context of a diverse, fast-paced work environment.
  • Strategic, creative, problem solver capable of working well independently and as a part of a team.
  • Demonstrated understanding of coaching and motivational interviewing

Language Skills: Fluency in written and spoken English, bilingual ability preferred in Spanish, French, Russian, Haitian Creole, Dari or Pashto. Cross-cultural understanding and strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Working Environment:

  • A combination of standard office environment, remote work, and ‘field’ time within the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities.

Compensation: Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget. Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
