Role & Responsibilities

Develop, monitor and evaluate the assigned health and nutrition (H&N) project, with support from sector advisors. Develop lead implementation and ensure adequate monitoring and evaluation for effective management and reporting on the project activities in line with the objectives, time frame and budget with a focus on nutrition system strengthening, training and coordination. Provide technical support and leadership, manage and train nutrition staff to meet quality standards in nutrition delivery, anticipate, plan, and contribute to the development of new nutrition project proposals and reports.

Project Overview

Medair Sudan is a complex and dynamic country programme due to instability related to conflict and politics. Medair returned to Sudan in 2020 and is currently implementing multi-sectoral projects in health, nutrition, WASH and Shelter/NFI and CVA in vulnerable communities. There are plans to expand the current programme into new areas, as well as growing and strengthening local partnerships.

April 2024. Full time, 12 months, contingent upon funding.

Key Activity Areas

Health & Nutrition Project Management

  • Manage the assigned H&N project(s) to meet the project objectives within budget and within the allotted time frame and report promptly any operational concerns to line manager and in-country H&N advisor.
  • Provide strong leadership of the assigned H&N project teams, working to ensure both short and long-term positive impacts and outcomes for beneficiaries, local authorities and local staff.
  • Contribute to development and implementation of an effective H&N intervention including data collection and reporting and monitoring tools, job aids and data quality assurance processes.
  • Set clear objectives and indicators for H&N activities in collaboration with the in-country H&N advisor, H&N staff, field managers and, where appropriate, with the local communities.
  • Continuously monitor and supervise H&N activities, evaluating progress through outputs and impacts using both quantitative and qualitative data, and involving the H&N team(s) in analysis and taking appropriate action as needed to ensure continued progress.
  • Provide input into the integration of beneficiary participation and accountability in all aspects of the project.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of activities according to Medair, donor and time frames and formats.
  • Contribute to new proposals, linked to the assessed needs and gaps and the Medair country strategy.

Staff Management

  • Line-manage the H&N Manager(s) of the assigned project, including day-to-day management, development and training, appraisals, etc.
  • Facilitate regular meetings to assist information sharing between project staff, to ensure all staff members are aware of project objectives and current work plans and to provide the opportunity for feedback.
  • Provide coaching and technical supervision to staff to develop ownership for H&N activities.
  • Assess the training needs of H&N staff and ensure that appropriate training is conducted, and new skills are used in the field.

Financial Management

  • Manage the budget for the assigned project(s) and ensure all expenses are according to budget and meet the Medair standards of financial management, including accountability and good governance.

Communication and Coordination

  • Develop and maintain appropriate, regular, transparent and supportive communication structures with the assigned H&N team, Medair in-country and GSO H&N managers and advisors and other relevant stakeholders, with the objective of ensuring good cooperation and partnerships.
  • Participate in H&N coordination meetings, Medair internal trainings, and other working groups or meetings, representing Medair and feeding back to the H&N staff and field managers on relevant issues.

Logistics

  • Provide direction, in coordination with the logistics activities of H&N staff, in the purchasing of medicines, supplies and equipment for the assigned H&N facilities and activities.
  • Provide leadership with the nutrition, health, logistics and finance staff to ensure items are procured, transported, stored, managed and accounted for correctly.

Quality Management

  • Promote and use the Medair intranet and other operating procedures, ensuring that all standardised formats are used and guidelines are followed.
  • Ensure H&N projects are implemented in line with donor proposals and requirements and in accordance with Medair, donor, country and international standards.

Qualifications

  • Higher level qualification, preferably in nutrition or relevant field as nursing/midwifery/doctor/community-based training. University degree in a relevant subject, preferably nutrition or public health.
  • Strong working knowledge of English (spoken and written).

Experience

  • 2 years post-qualification professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Management experience in a nutrition / health context.
  • 2 years experience working in a health/nutrition programme in a developing country, preferably in an insecure context.
  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Ability and willingness to manage project implementation.
  • Good numerical, report writing and administration skills. Problem solving ability.
  • Knowledge of humanitarian principles, Sphere and HAP Standards and other international humanitarian guidelines and protocols.
