BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  Domestically, our 28 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF WORK: The Health Intern will work closely with the Health Liaison and Healthcare Navigator to assist with addressing clients’ healthcare needs as well as deliver health education material to families to help them gain self-sufficiency in navigating the healthcare system.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·Attend intern orientation.

·Assist with client check-ins (over the phone or in person, as appropriate).

·      – Help make appointments for clients and record schedule in the team agenda.

·Keep track of appts on the master spreadsheet.

·Provide transportation to appointments and attend appointments if needed.

·Help submit internal referrals to other IRC programs as needed.

·Communicate with community partners for the purpose of case coordination.

·Explore community resources and assist with client referrals.

·Help deliver the Health Orientation workshop to families after some training.

·Keep thorough and accurate case file documentation in the IRC electronic system.

·Assist with organizing digital files to keep track of appointments for clients.

·Record hours and submit completed timesheet for each month.

Minimum Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be sensitive to the cultural and personality differences of the refugee clients.
  • Respect their beliefs and values, which may differ from yours.

·Strong interpersonal skills and interest in working with the refugee community

·Ownership of a car, a valid driver’s license, and car insurance

·Willingness to transport clients in your personal vehicle

·Willingness to be flexible and accommodating to client needs
