BACKGROUND:
Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.Domestically, our 28 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.
The International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City (IRC-SLC) Health Programs promote
physical and psychological well being by facilitating access to healthcare services and providing
education and advocacy.
SCOPE OF INTERN WORK:
The Health Promotion Program focuses on preventive health education and increasing
refugees’ health literacy and access to health care resources. The program provides a series of
health and wellness classes, bus orientations to health clinics. The Health Promotion intern(s) will provide direct support to the Health Promotion Specialist in conducting pre/post-assessments, teaching Navigating the Healthcare system classes, and organizing groups.
COMMITMENT: 10 – 20 hours per week for 3 months
•First Cohort: August 19th – December 6th
•Second Cohort: September 9th – December 20th
RESPONSIBILITIES:
•Teach Navigating the Healthcare System classes to adult refugee clients
•Conduct post-assessments with clients after they go through the health class series
•Enter and track data in Salesforce cloud comuting system
•Schedule health classes
•Assist in other health promotion areas as assigned
•Participate in health program meetings
•Assist the health team in transporting clients to their health appointments at least once a week
•Support the IRC–SLC office with other duties as assigned
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1.Gain professional experience working in the public health sector.
2.Gain skills in assessing the public health needs of different communities.
3.Gain public speaking experience through teaching health classes to clients.
Minimum Qualifications:
REQUIREMENTS:
•Background in health promotion, social work, or other related field
•Experience working with diverse populations
•Motivated, flexible, able to work independently
•Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
•Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
•Valid driver’s license, access to a vehicle, and willingness to drive clients
•Understanding of program planning and evaluation preferred
•Must be currently enrolled in a graduate/undergraduate program, or have graduated less than 6 months ago
•Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English; fluency in additional foreign language preferred.

NOTE: This is an UNPAID INTERNSHIP, mileage reimbursement is available for using a personal vehicle, but there is no hourly wage
