Job Description

Plans, organizes, and directs the School of Molecular Sciences safety program. Enforces compliance with state and federal health, safety and fire codes and reduces or prevents safety hazards, dangers or accidents in areas of hazardous materials, fire, life, occupational and/or industrial hygiene safety.

Essential Duties

  • Interprets and evaluates university compliance with applicable regulatory codes and standards.
  • Develops, recommends, and implements policy on health/safety protection.
  • Develops accident prevention and loss control systems and programs and ensures implementation throughout the School.
  • Reviews construction plans for new and existing renovation projects to ensure compliance with fire, health/safety regulatory codes and standards to assure compliance prior to occupancy.
  • Collaboratively works with other professional disciplines (e.g. architects, engineers, and construction managers) to discuss safety precautions, requirements, recommendations and code analysis.
  • Monitors and/or performs fire, health/safety inspections, observes working conditions, assesses records, conducts interviews, prepares reports, and evaluates program maintenance to determine priority of hazard corrections.
  • Assists with worker’s compensation program and performs or oversees investigations, analyses trends to identify problem areas and recommends action to reduce risk and financial loss.
  • Conducts or directs studies and statistical analysis to identify hazards and evaluate potential for loss. Prepares reports based on analyses.
  • Advises, coordinates with and provides technical guidance to university community (e.g. staff, faculty, students, contractors, vendors and administrators) regarding safety codes, policies and procedures.
  • Maintains relationships with the ASU Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), regulatory agency representatives to remain current on changing regulatory codes and standards or interpretations and serves as a point of contact for the School of Molecular Sciences.
  • Develops, implements, and performs health/safety training programs or activities to improve awareness of health/safety and protection procedures.
  • Works with employees to correct deficiencies and implements corrective action and discipline.
  • Ensures required licenses, permits or registrations are maintained per regulatory requirements (e.g. hazardous materials operations, grant funded research).
  • Performs or assists with compliance and budget estimates with necessary supporting documentation and justification criteria.
  • Assesses existing programs and updating, replacing or developing additional programs as needed to address anticipated health/safety hazards.
  • Participates and/or represents the School in recognized environmental health and safety organizations.
  • Works cooperatively and collaboratively to achieve the mission and vision of the School; demonstrates commitment to the team.
  • Supports School and EHS Committees when charged.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering or related field AND four years’ experience in safety, fire prevention, environmental health, industrial hygiene or related field, which includes two year in supervisory capacity; OR, eight years’ experience in safety, fire prevention, environmental health, industrial hygiene or related field, which includes two year in supervisory capacity; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of occupational safety.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing safety procedures. and policies.
  • Experience in interpreting and applying federal, state and local safety laws and regulations.
  • Experience in developing safety policies.
  • Experience in investigating and analyzing accidents and their causes.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Work in laboratories, shops, waste facilities and other hazardous locations.
  • Work in indoor and outdoor environments that may include extreme weather conditions; hot in summer and cold in winter.
