Healthy Cities Program Director, Arizona

Based in Phoenix, Arizona, the Healthy Cities Program in the Arizona Chapter was established to help change the relationship between Valley cities and nature, so that both can thrive. In the Phoenix Metro Area, TNC is committed to increasing and maintaining a healthy tree canopy for mitigating extreme heat in frontline communities in the face of a warming climate. The Arizona Healthy Cities Program Director leads and manages the Healthy Cities Program for the Arizona Chapter and is responsible for developing and implementing innovative, high impact strategies that equitably build cool, healthy, and climate-resilient cities in Arizona, with a focus across the Phoenix Metro Area. The Arizona Healthy Cities Program Director will build strategic partnerships and implement nature-based solutions that address urban sustainability challenges, including urban heat, and meaningfully transform the urban landscape. This includes building the capacity of frontline communities impacted first and worst by climate change and scaling nature-based solutions with public and private sector partners.

The Arizona Healthy Cities Program Director (AZHCPD) plays a leadership role in designing and overseeing the Arizona Chapter’s urban strategies that improve urban life and maximize resilience and benefits for communities.  The AZHCPD establishes the Conservancy as a major urban conservation partner in Arizona, with a focus in the Phoenix Metro Area. This position also leads innovative and critical thinking, negotiates complex and innovative solutions, and implements conservation strategies at scale in support of the Chapter’s priorities and the Conservancy’s 2030 Goals. Essential functions include, but are not limited to: 

Strategy Development and Implementation (approximately 50%)

• Bring clarity, precision and vision to the work of the Healthy Cities team.
• Lead the implementation of the Healthy Cities business plan, which defines the Healthy Cities priorities and strategies in Arizona.
• Oversee the implementation of the Healthy Cities urban conservation strategies.
• Set ambitious and clear goals for the Healthy Cities Program team and define targets, measure progress, learn, and rapidly evolve and adapt, as needed.

Building and Sustaining Relationships (approximately 20%)

• Develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with strategic partners.
• Serve as the principal contact to government agencies, community-based organizations, academia and other key stakeholders.
• Negotiates complex and innovative solutions with government agencies, other conservation organizations and key stakeholders to equitably build healthy communities.

Team Management (approximately 15%)

• Lead, manage and inspire the Healthy Cities team. This includes regular on-going performance check-ins, establishing objectives, providing coaching; and completing quarterly and annual performance partnership evaluations.
• Provide timely and transparent management, communications and decision-making to the Healthy Cities team.

Conservation Leadership (approximately 5%)

• Serve as a member of the Chapter’s Conservation Leadership Team and participate in meetings.
• Participate in conservation management decision-making.
• Coordinate closely with other Conservation Directors and identify cross-program collaboration.

Other (approximately 10%)

• Represent the Healthy Cities Program with external and internal audiences.
• Collaborate with Development on fundraising efforts including developing funding proposals, preparing donor reports, and cultivating donors.
• Collaborate with Marketing on raising awareness about TNC’s Healthy Cities work, urban sustainability challenges, and the role that nature can play in addressing these challenges.
• Establish and maintain optimal standards of performance while controlling costs and administering budgets.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

• BA/BS degree and 7 years’ experience in conservation practice or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Fundraising experience, including identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation
• Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.
• Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
• Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies.
• Experience negotiating.
• Experience with Microsoft products (i.e., Word, Excel, Power Point); and internet research.
• Youth certified (certify completion of training within initial 30 days of employment: annually thereafter).
• Valid driver’s license.

SALARY INFORMATION

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $81.900-$99,360 for annual base salary. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate’s location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges.
