Job Summary:

The Healthy Country Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating conservation and sustainable land and resource management activities within a designated geographic area. This role plays a crucial part in maintaining and enhancing the environmental health and biodiversity of the region while also considering the well-being of local communities.

As part of your responsibilities in this role, you will oversee the management of Rangers (both land and sea), the Savanna Fire Management Program, provide support for Homelands, and contribute to the management of Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conservation Planning: Develop and implement strategies for the protection, preservation, and sustainable management of natural resources and ecosystems within the designated area.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain strong relationships with local communities, government agencies, Indigenous groups, environmental organisations, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Resource Management: Monitor and manage land, water, and biodiversity, ensuring sustainable use and conservation of natural assets.
  • Research and Data Collection: Conduct ecological surveys and gather data on local flora, fauna, and ecosystems to inform conservation efforts.
  • Community Development: Collaborate with local communities to support their economic, social, and cultural development, while also respecting traditional land management practices.
  • Grant Writing and Fundraising: Seek funding opportunities, write grant proposals, and manage budgets to support conservation initiatives.
  • Advocacy and Education: Advocate for environmental protection and conservation policies and educate the public, community, TDC and Staff on the importance of biodiversity and sustainable land management.
  • Compliance and Reporting: Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental regulations and report on the progress of conservation efforts to stakeholders and authorities.
  • Effective leadership and coordination of workforce: Facilitate the efficient and collaborative operation of all departments through effective leadership and workforce coordination, ultimately enabling the organization to attain its objectives while fostering a positive and productive work environment.

  • Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of the local ecology, culture, and environmental challenges.
  • Commitment to environmental sustainability and conservation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to liaise and communicate effectively with people at all levels.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven time management and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise multiple tasks to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions. Ability to work independently, be self-motivated and results driven.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Natural Resource Management, ecology, conservation biology, or a related field.
  • Prior Experience in conservation or natural resource management, with a proven track record of successful project management.
  • Previous experience in supervising and organising a team in a remote community within this role or a comparable position.
  • Previous experience working within a remote community.

Essential Licences / Clearances prior to commencement:

  • Hold a current or ability to obtain – National Police Check required.
  • Hold a current or ability to obtain – Northern Land Council Work Permit.
  • Hold a current or ability to obtain – Northern Territory Ochre Card
  • Minium C class drivers’ licence
  • Hold a current or ability to obtain – Coxswain Ticket
