Position Description

The Field Biologist will support the implementation of field-based conservation and research projects focused on federally listed and at-risk herpetofauna, including gopher tortoise, black pinesnake, and other PARCA focal species. This position will play a key role in gopher tortoise headstarting efforts, assisting with nest location, egg collection, incubation, hatchling care, and release to support population augmentation at Camp Shelby and surrounding landscapes. Additional responsibilities include field data collection, species monitoring, and support of habitat management activities. The technician will work closely with project staff to advance applied conservation actions, contribute to long-term monitoring efforts, and support restoration and management objectives across the program area.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with field implementation of projects targeting species such as gopher tortoise, black pinesnake, and other amphibians and reptiles
• Support construction and installation of drift fences, traps, and other sampling infrastructure
• Conduct field surveys, trapping, and radio telemetry
• Assist with gopher tortoise headstarting activities, including nest surveys, egg transport, incubation, and hatchling care
• Collect and record GPS data and maintain accurate field records
• Perform data entry and assist with database management
• Assist with prescribed fire operations and habitat management activities
• Represent ARC’s on-the-ground presence to build relationships and communicate with state/federal agencies, private citizens, and organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, environmental science, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• 2+ years experience with wildlife monitoring projects
• Experience using paper or digital maps to identify, relay, and track project boundaries and data.
• Willingness to regularly travel or work varied hours (eg. night surveys)
• Ability to execute multiple projects, maintain organized results, and relay issues to meet project deadlines.
• Applicants must be self-motivated, responsible, and have the ability to solve problems.
• Experience navigating landscapes and driving 4×4 roads, potentially with offline maps.
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs and work long hours outdoors, year-round.

Preferred Qualifications

• Working knowledge of southeastern herpetofauna identification, ecosystems, tortoise husbandry, and sampling methods
• Experience with herpetofauna inventory and monitoring techniques
• Experience operating ATVs/UTVs and towing trailers
• Ability to meet National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) certification requirements
• Strong time management and ability to work independently
• Experience with data collection and basic data management
